Caption : kobe bryant. “To meet Kobe was to meet a cultural institution. His surrounding entourage was an entire factory on the move yet somehow he was at peace – in full control of life’s machine. His physical stature was humbling – his silvery skin, in perfect condition. Kobe Bryant was living life 200% that day. He sat for me for a few precious moments – time stood still – the racing swirl halted. ‘Where does your extraordinary self belief come from?’ I asked. He replied, ‘When I was a boy I used to say to myself SOMEBODY HAS TO WIN, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE ME.’ Kobe, you inspired a generation to believe in human resilience. Rest in peace.”Likes : 38947

Caption : robert de niro. “Robert De Niro’s father was a great artist, he had a wonderful painting studio in a SoHo loft space in Manhattan. Although the actors father passed away many years ago, De Niro kept the studio exactly as it was the day his father died. The last unfinished painting still on the canvas, the paintbrushes ready for action, open sketchbooks; It was a place of meditation. A place of truth. There is nothing so pure as an artists workplace, it reminded me of my own fathers office and art studio. I had the great privelidge to be invited by this legendary actor to do a portrait of him at this very location. The man arrived and I realized something special indeed – the fathers studio allowed us to be human. My white background covered up the environment but it all showed in De Niro’s face. This was not the celebrated actor, this was the man. Robert De Niro, I salute you.”Likes : 31453

We will be talking about the coronavirus, resilience, compassion and our strong capacity to overcome adversity. If any of you are feeling lost and looking for answers I hope this intimate discussion will help you remember you are not alone. Join us today at 2pm EST. Please register via the link in my profile. In these hard times we must be human, authentic, compassionate and brave. Let’s stick together and stay close in spite of our physical barriers. I’m proud today to share with you a brand new picture and a new iconic subject for my archive. I photographed Colin Kaepernick at my New York studio. The session was honest, humble and intimate, which allowed us both to capture this visual symbol of empowerment and strength. Colin Kaepernick, you trusted me and I salute you.”Likes : 28863

Caption : harry styles. I took this picture during a whirlwind photo session with the entire One Direction clan. I remember having one hour to photograph a group shot, as well as individual sittings with each band member. This restrictive timing only added to the intensity of the moment. I must admit, I knew very little about the group, but I am always happy to learn, and at the time of the photo session I was told they were the biggest act in the world. Harry clearly stood out for me. In this picture he has a magical quality, and it was so easy to capture him. He was charming and inquisitive, and I was surprised at how unguarded he was. I post this picture as a tribute to Harry who has now emerged as a major artist in his own right. I was proud to include Harry’s iris in my latest NFT drop, and I am pleased to announce @talb3311 is the winner of our competition – GUESS WHO? Congratulations on winning my signed copy of PLATON’S REPUBLIC. Thank you all for playing the game. Harry Styles, EYE salute you.Likes : 28800

Caption : Dear friends, it’s been a long time since I have posted and I apologize for my absence. I have been completely consumed with some really, really exciting new initiatives and plans. I am hoping to shake up the world as we come out of lockdown. In the meantime, I wanted to tell you a story that may resonate with you. I spent a day with George Clooney in his Hollywood garden some time ago. We had worked together 25 years earlier as we were both beginning our careers and it was so nice to reconnect. We are much older now and hopefully wiser. I asked him to describe our time. He said that we are living through an extraordinary period in history, that we have more information at our fingertips and more connectivity than ever before yet somehow, we seem to know less. He continued…if we want to get the news today, we probably go to a source online that confirms what we already believe, and so we are in danger of being trapped in our own echo chamber – and that magical thing called a shared experience, where we respectfully debate our differences, is rapidly disappearing. Yet as I write this post today, I am reminded of our beautiful and unique community. I know for sure you are all different types of people who believe in different things, yet you continue to engage with my stories, and I am always inspired by your uplifting and thoughtful comments. Your support reinforces my optimism for a brighter, fairer and more inclusive future. We show up and we are present. At the end of my day with George I asked, “What do you hope for as we face these challenges?” He said, “I hope for reason because reason always wins out.” George Clooney, I salute you.Likes : 27349

Caption : Dear friends, here is something for the holidays. I took this picture of Adele in a private and secret location in London, away from the madness that often comes with celebrity. She had recently had a beautiful little baby boy and I was so thrilled that while we were working, her baby with was us keeping us company. As I prepared to take this particular frame, focusing on Adele’s eyelash, her son was crawling around her feet. Suddenly, he started to squeeze her ankles with his tiny fingers. As she felt the pressure on her foot, her spirit instantly transformed. This is not the face of one of the world’s greatest superstars, this is the soul of a loving young mother. Adele, thank you for sharing that day with me and thank you for your trust. We had a human moment together and it is now embedded in this picture forever more. To Adele and all the working mothers of the world, I salute you.Likes : 24480

Caption : “I write to you today at a pivotal moment in global history. The fourth industrial revolution – that surging data beast has entered a new phase. THIS IS THE END OF THE BEGINNING. We face grave challenges, and despite seductive promises of technological empowerment and connectivity from our tech titans, we remain a fractured and dark society. Our identity is defined by tribalism. Our beliefs are informed by echo chambers. Social media corporations have benefited from our new filter bubble existence (rewarding us with programmed endorphin rushes, thus keeping us glued to their platforms). Furthermore, the new media giants have also played a devastating role in the disruption of our long trusted institutions. Our capacity to reflect on current events with tempered context and objectivity is now hindered. News channels today often embrace a misguided greed for augmented metrics and viewing figures, rather than fair and balanced information. FRIENDS, it is time to embrace a new bright dawn. It is time to lead public opinion rather than follow it. Our reliance on focus groups shall be replaced by our steadfast faith in truth and justice. If we are to enjoy the fruits of individual empowerment, then we must also exercise responsible global citizenship and moral compass. Suspicion and slander are infections, but so is compassion and empathy. So I say come on then, let us go forward together in our united strength, let us all belong to a nobel cause again. We are all equal stake holders. We are all future champions of the human condition. To be a leader is to embrace servitude. So let’s be useful, let’s do our duty, and let’s acknowledge that our differences are the making of our majestic greatness. A new highlight of hope has caught the chrome of my camera, and I am ready to bridge build. Join me.”Likes : 24135

Caption : daniel craig. Friends, I could not resist this one. Here is my tribute to Daniel Craig. When I took this picture, he had recently finished 007 filming, and came to the photo session with his arm in a sling. I presume his injury was from performing his own stunts. The on-set publicist insisted that we only take headshots, but Daniel has such a physical presence. He kindly removed the sling and rested his damaged arm on his leg, wincing at the movement and pain. I took this photograph capturing a moment where he looks invincible, yet is secretly battle torn. Daniel was very kind that day to see beyond the restrictions of public relations and recognize the importance of artistic decisions. Daniel Craig, I salute you.Likes : 23748

Caption : bobby weir. “Bobby Weir walked into my New York studio with an entourage – a crew who were clearly protective yet, everybody knew something special was about to happen. The atmosphere was respectful and charged. The man looked like a wizard – a thick, hand-knitted cloak draped over his shoulders, a worn leather cowboy hat topped waves of pure white hair, his snow beard was biblical, his eyes were on fire. This is a mystical man. The dialogue started immediately with a warm handshake, ‘I’m Bobby Weir, I play music and I tell stories.’ He continued, ‘it’s all about story telling – any artist is first and foremost a storyteller – it’s an urge that we artists have – it’s my escape – I get to step aside, I get to be somebody else and that somebody else is – ALL OF US. IT’S A SHARED EXPERIENCE.’ I asked Bobby about current divisions in our society and after a long, searching pause he spoke, ‘when people fall into the music all their tribal considerations fall away and their rooted humanity is what everyone shares. For instance, when Hank Williams sings about loneliness it’s totally universal.’ Bobby then quotes with the respect of history – ‘THE SILENCE OF A FALLING STAR LIGHTS UP A PURPLE SKY, AND AS I WONDER WHERE YOU ARE, I’M SO LONELY I COULD CRY. He’s sharing some pain there but it’s something we can all feel.’ Another long pause – I’m waiting with anticipation for his thought process to resolve… then he continues, ‘that’s something worth doing – to empathize with people.’ I asked Bobby about the meaning of people power, he said ‘I know we are all one. I’ve seen it – I’ve felt it. It’s hard to get that across to some folks – that I am you and you are me, but it’s the truth, I know that. I guess it’s difficult for a lot of people to accept the fact that you really are insignificant – and the more we come to that realization, the more we can accept the fact that we all share a common humanity.’ Bobby Weir, you are a wonderful and mystical human being, I salute you.” @gqLikes : 23300

Caption : (1/2) george h. w. bush. ”Today is a day to remember George H. W. Bush. I have fond, personal memories to share with you. I photographed the former president in his Houston office during his son’s term in the White House. Bush Sr. had tremendous charm and wit – his unrelenting political battles of the past had not disfigured the spirit of the man in the present. I asked him about Margaret Thatcher – he said she was a tough lady but a loyal, steady friend. They were together at a summit the very moment news broke about Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait, ‘she was a rock that day,’ he said. President Bush was also a huge admirer of Churchill. This picture is our private tribute to Winston – ‘V’ for victory at the end of the second world war. Here is the Bush Sr. character on view – playful, disarmingly cheeky, with a deep rooted love and respect, for public service, courage, and history. This picture was to become the cover of a great magazine called Texas Monthly. My dearest friend and greatest collaborator, Scott Dadich, was then, creative director. As soon as the cover was released publicly however, it occurred to me that the George W. Bush White House administration may read the image differently. I immediately received an email from one of W’s chief political advisors – I would love to share the note with you today. ‘Dear Mr. Platon, congratulations on a cover with cross-generational appeal. George H. W. Bush’s two upraised fingers may represent a victory sign, or a peace sign, depending on which side of World War II the reader was born. However, my three year old daughter had a different take. Upon glimpsing the cover from her seat at the front of the grocery cart, she exclaimed, happily, “daddy, that man sings LITTLE BUNNY FOO FOO!”’”Likes : 21847

Caption : stephen hawking. “Professor Hawking’s physical condition during the session must have been extremely challenging for him. As far as I could tell, one of the last functioning muscles in his body was around his right eye. In this picture you can see a sensor has been fitted to his glasses to monitor movement. Thus, he can direct a cursor over each letter in the alphabet on a computer until he makes a selection: LETTERS – WORDS – SENTENCES – PARAGRAPHS. The world’s greatest free mind is imprisoned in the most fragile and limited body. By the end of my sitting he was clearly exhausted. Just keeping his eyes open was a mountain to climb. Knowing he had given his all, I asked if he could slip me a single word of wisdom – one word about life from Professor Stephen Hawking was bound to be prophetic. His nurse explained that when he is tired his powers of communication are less accurate. She suggested that we let him be. As I packed up to leave I heard beeps coming from the professor’s tablet monitor. We all turned to see him moving the cursor over each letter. ‘HE’S TYPING!’ With each beep we all leaned in with anticipation – He stopped at the letter ‘W.’ “I doubt that is accurate,” said his carer. Then the search for the second letter began – BEEP BEEP BEEP until the letter ‘O.’ Once again his nurse seemed doubtful. “W – O, it doesn’t mean anything.” Then his beeps began for a third and final time. BEEP BEEP BEEP – all the way back to the letter ‘W’ again. Before the nurse could interpret, it hit me, “Oh my God,” I shouted. “He typed the word WOW!” My heart raced as I squeezed his hand, “Thank you professor,” I whispered. Despite this man’s overwhelming adversity, he still believes in the mighty power of WOW. How lucky I am to receive such an important philosophical lesson in optimism. In the face of life’s challenges, a courageous human being looks at the world with wonder. Professor Hawking, I salute you and the power of WOW.Likes : 20132

In the tense last few days of a contentious election campaign between Barack Obama and John McCain, General Colin Powell made a historic appearance on a news program called Meet The Press. He announced that even though he was a Republican, he had decided to endorse Obama [a Democrat] for President. He said that he believed Obama would represent a more inclusive society at a time when America was deeply divided. He said he felt this way because of a photograph he had seen in a magazine. He described the picture in great detail — a grieving mother at her son’s grave in Arlington Cemetery. Her son had died fighting for America in Iraq. The mother’s name was Elsheba Khan, and she was an American-Muslim, as was her fallen son. General Colin Powell described her son as a true patriot who had made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. The magazine he referred to was The New Yorker, and I am humbled to say the portrait was mine. The mother’s grief had touched the heart of America’s first black Secretary of State, and helped inspire him to rise above political division for the sake of inclusive unity. Over the years, Colin Powell and I became friends, and I enjoyed many inspiring and uplifting conversations with him about race, religious freedom and service. He described America as a constant work in progress, and that we are all stakeholders in our communal future. He was gracious enough to appear in a Netflix documentary about my work, produced by my dear friend Scott Dadich. During our filmed photo session, the General shared his bold optimistic vision for America’s society. Colin Powell once wrote me a letter which I treasure to this day. He noted that my portrait of Elsheba Khan had shown him, in a painful way, what America is really about. General Colin Powell, you were one of our greatest statesmen and you will surely be missed. Caption : prince. “To spend the day with Prince is a rare and special thing. He was performing in Nashville, Tennessee and I was to photograph him backstage moments before he would thrill 20,000 people. He was introspective but surprisingly generous. He invited me to his sound check – I was mesmerized as he played every single instrument, making constant adjustments with the sound technicians. Even the drum kit was put through a rigorous examination. Every cymbal, every tom tom, the bass drum, and finally the snare. It was an exhaustive process of perfection and complete control – time stood still. I built my studio behind the stage and he waited until the arena was filled with screaming crowds before he finally appeared for me. I was overwhelmed, and he was calm – stately and tremendously trippy. I thanked him for providing a soundtrack to my youth. In particular, there was a song called Pop Life – an amazing song. I played it every Saturday night as I dressed for a party – a ritual that helped me feel 200% alive. He listened to my scattered reminiscence and smiled that Prince smile – then he chuckled to himself. ‘What’s so funny?’ I asked. He whispered, ‘I used to get dressed to that song too.’ Prince, you were majestic, and if you’re listening, I salute you.”Likes : 19485

Caption : stephen hawking. “I photographed Professor Hawking in his personal office buried deep inside the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge University, England. The room was dominated by an oversized blackboard filled with chalked algebra equations. Pictures of Marylyn Monroe were scattered on all remaining walls. The professor was brought in by a team of medical nurses and a technical adviser. I was asked to leave the room so they could have some privacy to prepare him for my sitting – and prepared he was! HE HAS A POWERFUL PRESENCE. SILENT. MOTIONLESS. YET, 200% ALIVE. THIS MAN RADIATES CHARISMA – HIS EYES BURN WITH FIRE. He rocked a dapper tweed jacket with a silk cravat, which elegantly covered up all the plastic tubes entering his fragile body. He was engulfed by a mechanical throne-like wheel chair, in my opinion it only added to this man’s stature. At one point his eyes became sensitive to my lighting and during a quick break his nurse fitted his sunglasses. Suddenly, it all happened – rock star swagger. Here is professor Stephen Hawking as Platon sees him, a badass super hero. Professor Hawking, I salute you.”Likes : 19476

Caption : reverend ct vivian. “Today it is with great sadness that I post a tribute to one of my all time heroes and mentors. The Reverend CT Vivian passed away early this morning, he was 95 years old. He was one of Martin Luther King’s closest advisors and a most loyal champion for the Civil Rights Movement. Dedicated to non-violent protests, CT Vivian spoke truth to power and courageously confronted his racist foes with dignity and resilience. I photographed him in Atlanta, Georgia at the Ebenezer Baptist Church where Martin Luther King used to preach to his congregation. After the shoot, CT took the day off and spent hours giving me private counsel – the principles of non-violent direct action – the importanace of compassion – how to fight for justice and drive positive change. I asked, ‘What do you say to my generation?’ He replied, ‘When you get knocked down stand back up, stand up to the powers that be, but do it peacefully with grace in your heart, without violence.’ I picked up my camera and focused the lens – he closed his eyes and raised his hand. ‘Reverend, what are you thinking at this moment?’ I asked. He replied, ‘I’m reaching for the stars my brother, reaching for the stars.’ Reverend CT Vivian, I salute you.”Likes : 18686

Caption : kirk douglas. “Kirk Douglas was my first portrait subject in America. I was working with John Kennedy Jr. and his magazine ‘George.’ I arrived at his mid-century modern home to set up. It was a mini Metropolitan Museum of Art. Picasso’s – Matisse’s – Irving Penn portraits, this was a temple of good taste. Kirk Douglas had recently had a stroke and his mouth was a little slanted, his speech – blurred, yet the fire burned brightly in his eyes. As he sat down in front of my lens, I felt I was facing history. ‘I can’t believe I’m about to photograph the man who played Spartacus’ I said. He leaned forward and replied, ‘I didn’t play Spartacus – I AM SPARTACUS!’ Kirk Douglas, rest in peace.”Likes : 18189

Caption : martin scorsese. “I first came to New York to work with John Kennedy Jr. He founded a political magazine called ‘George’ and I was recruited as one of his main photographers. He sent me on a rock and roll tour through America, giving me the most extraordinary access to the most fascinating people, the movers and the shakers of our time. We had a deal, he would continue to give me unprecedented access to people that I would not normally have access to, and in return I had to be human and not be dazzled by their status and power. He wanted me to show what it’s really like to meet these people. The moment I would step back from the edge, the deal would be over. One of my first portraits for John was of Martin Scorsese. Scorsese was a hero of mine and his films have directly shaped my narrative. I photographed this legendary director in his private cinema/screening room. You can’t tell that despite his short height, he was a towering inferno of talent. As I set up my studio in his screening room, I could see all of his actor’s gestures embedded in his personality. A little bit of Harvey Keitel, a little piece of Robert De Niro. I remember the room being freezing, and I asked him, ‘why is the AC cranked to such an insane level?’ He replied, ‘I need the cold to keep me edgy while I watch my movies. I never want to feel comfortable or sleepy.’ Mr. Scorsese, I salute you.”Likes : 17249

Caption : evelyn valazquez. “This is Evelyn, she was 3 years old when I took this picture. Her father had been placed in a detention center for working with false documents. I saw the little girl marching with her mother at an immigration reform rally in Arizona, I knew instantly that the message on her t-shirt along with her beautiful spirit would be a powerful statement. I asked her mother if I could take a picture of her daughter, she agreed but then the little girl refused – she was too shy – she did what my children would do with a stranger and hid behind her mothers legs. This was not the picture I wanted to take – a victimized child running from authority. So I had to earn her trust by playing balloons with her for 5 and a half hours. I never had to earn trust like that with any of the powerful politicians or hollywood celebrities I’ve had the privilege to work with. Eventually Evelyn pointed to me and said “PICTURE NOW.” I had passed her audition. I took this picture with a steadfast conviction that this had to be one of the most important photos of my career. She stands not as a victim but as an empowered little girl filled with hope. I congratulated her mother for having such a well behaved little girl, and her mother told her daughter “the photographer man is very happy!” Evelyn replies, “IF I DID SO GOOD, DOES THAT MEAN DADDY CAN COME HOME NOW?” Perhaps our politicians can explain to Evelyn why her family must be separated. I certainly cannot.” To meet more of the heroes of our time head over to The People’s Portfolio – @peoplesportfolioLikes : 17089

Caption : john mccain. “I had the great privilege to photograph Senator John McCain many times. The first was back in the mid 1990’s. I was collaborating with John Kennedy Jr. on a large scale photo essay, honoring all the senators and congressmen who had served their country fighting in the Vietnam War. McCain stood out – he was mischievous and fun that day on Capitol Hill. It showed in my picture – a fearless man of conviction who always spoke his mind, ironically covering his mouth. Years later, we met again under different circumstances – now he was running for president and my role was to reflect the heavy responsibility he was carrying. He told me he hated that first portrait – that it was “too artistic” and not “Washington D.C. material.” He said, “make me look like a president this time and I’ll forgive you.” I replied that I could not portray him as anything other than himself. Suddenly, he got it – that moment of empowerment – a chance to project his own authenticity. John McCain rose to the photographic occasion – a dignified man facing a divided nation. With great humility, he believed in service and it showed in my pictures – he was not a physically graceful man – he had sustained permanent injuries from being tortured in Vietnam and this affected his posture and flexibility. But what I captured was his courage, his dignity, and his respect for his country. This was a man whose service was a true measure of his patriotism – a political maverick driven by his moral compass and not by mob rule. The last time we met he pulled me aside and whispered in my ear “you are forgiven.” Ultimately however, my pictures were not of a president to be but of one of the most honorable senators ever to serve on Capitol Hill, unwilling to bend to the split screen – party politics that defines our current turbulent history. Senator John McCain, Requiescat in Pace, I salute you.”Likes : 16939

Caption : quincy jones. “I have been thinking a lot lately about Quincy Jones. I spent the day with him at his LA home back in the late 90’s. John Kennedy Jr. asked me to photograph the most generous philanthropists in Hollywood, and Quincy was on the list. His home was a temple of cultural history – evidence that this legendary game changer had consistently defied musical and racial categorization. The list of his collaborators is extraordinary – Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Herbie Hancock, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson. Just think – it was a Quincy Jones recording with Sinatra and Basie that became the first piece of music ever to be played on the moon. Just think – it was a Quincy Jones recording with Michael Jackson that became the best selling album of all time. All my heroes broke social barriers but did so with artistic merit, love, and optimism. I call it, GREATNESS OF HEART. But honestly, it takes faith and unremitting zeal to step out and fight for racial fairness and dignity. So I asked for some advice: “What did you say to the old guard, the outdated power brokers who were unwilling to give your talent a chance?” Quincy’s glowing smile morphed into the face of determination. He replied, “Not one drop of my self worth depends on your acceptance of me.” I had tapped into this man’s FORCE FACTOR. This close up picture was taken one second later. Eventually, it was time to hug this legend goodbye – I couldn’t help feeling emotional. Quincy put his hand on my shoulder and said, “man, you must be a musician.” It doesn’t get better than that. Quincy Jones, I salute you.”Likes : 16730
