Caption : Taking time out to do this 7 min exercise can mean all the difference in the world. I remember this episode 33 years ago. This is what introduced us to counseling. Way way before it was widely accepted. Many aren’t aware that not only do we have the ability to transform & manifest the future. We also have the ability to heal our past. The way our brains are wired we don’t know the difference between “reality” & “fantasy” Just like you can imagine leaving the job & the repetitive life you have now & imagine the future you want for yourself (people often want tangible proof of safety which is why we drag our feet to our fantasy) We can also replay a trauma or the traumatized into a new scenario that your mind will accept as reality. Before i fell down the @drjoedispenza rabbit hole of meditation/healing/manifesting (starting smack dab in the pandemic and uh…..so far so awesome!) I remember recording this episode and doing this exercise three decades ago. I never heard anyone talk about “failure being ok & use as a learning tool, not as a means to give up on myself” or the ideal of “imaging having the ability to access and save your 5 year old self from ____________” I been looking for this Oprah clip for eons. That’s the ONLY way to get through this stage of life and not self soothe on pills or drank or all the other 28 addictions. I knew this 3000 jawn was a left turn but I didn’t know it’s the RIGHT left turn. The storyline alone of a musician losing his mojo & passion finds it again came to me at the right time. Caption : Wow I can’t believe @patricia.adores.prince found this mythical legendary flier of a show I heard about that actually goes down in history. This show is crucial. Before he died Ronald Bell of K&TG shared a story about hearing “I Wanna Be Your Lover” for the first time at this particular venue Gauging the audience reaction he knew this song was an immediate hit——and as with most craftsmen: you hear a song, you study the elements, you recreate it, you dismantle it and rebuild it into your own. So he notated the chords & rhythm on staff paper, stared at it….& does what most songwriters do: plays the chords BACKWARDS. Figures out a rhythm that fits. He gives birth to their biggest song: Celebration. But it’s a groove, not a complete song just yet. (he now needs a bridge but has no ideas) On top of the piano is a Billboard Magazine. He opens to the top 100 pop hits to see what song his band would resonate with. It just so happens that the number 5 song in the country was the red hot “Rock With You” (MJ’s “Off The Wall” lp was burning up the world—-so he takes what he feels is the best part of the song (the verse “girl close your eyes let the rhythm get into you”)——grabs those chords —-transposes to a lower key to fit his reverse “Rovel Rouy Eb Annaw I” groove and now he adds the words (“it’s time to come together it’s up to you, so what’s your pleasuaaaagggghh??!”) & there it is: Prince first hit backwards & Michael Jackson’s hit that proves he won’t be a one hit comeback artist is how we got the inescapable “Celebration” by @koolandthegang. I never shared these stories (really don’t have time these days cause I been up since 7 prepping 🎥) but there was this period in which he accidentally met our manager Rich Nichols and he was OBSESSED with him ——like there was a period when they hung heavy just because to know Rich was to get schooled in the most craziest mensa level knowledge——I mean even half the time I just feel like Rich is elsewhere channeling a cheat sheet through me (“oh yeah Rich once said blah blah blah”) but it was such a weird time cause Rich would get back and I’m like “dude this is so random….like yall spend all this time together….what in the hell do you and Norman Lear talk about?!!!” And I guess Norm was just fascinated with anyone that did ALOT of critical thinking and analytical thought process (uh you critics would call that “overthinking” and kinda call me out righteously 🤣🤣😂😂) ——believe it or not that’s the ONE thing I’m trying to lose as I take these new steps in life (more passion in my heart and less calculating over analyzing——-but back then we were all——ok I WAS all about “safety” and “people pleasing” and now I’m about self advocating and “what is it that I want?” Or “what is it that I’m passionate about? Am I on fire about this or are you afraid to be like hurting someone’s feelings by declining or (the likely scenario) “are you avoiding life by distracting yourself with work work work?” Not to go off on a tangent but if there ever was a time I wish I was a fly in the room, it would be for all of those weekends Norman & Rich would debate discuss strategize and just talk. I mean they weren’t even plannin anything (“wait are we negotiating a deal or somethin?”) Nah, they were just two birds of a feather and now…they are someone in alternate earth arguing til the cows came home about somethin. Caption : I gotta admit one of the highlights of 2023 was coming on one of the best music podcasts (search #WhatHadHappenedWas follow @stonyislandpods) in which i had to revisit a time in my life I thought was in my rear view mirror. If liner notes and director commentary are your thing? Then @open_mike_eagle has something for you!!!! once done an album—-I was the cat would put the memories in my rear view mirror. Very rarely looking back. But doing that 13 episode podcast has given me a new appreciation for those albums. Yeah I’ll post an album cover for the anniversary but I felt like “damn this didn’t go triple platinum so no one cares”——but now I have a relationship in which I appreciate all the blood sweat joy laughter and work that went into these albums. Technically this lp #DoYouWantMore is indeed 30 years old ——we released it in Europe in 1994 but held off on the US release until Jan 17th 1995—-so yeah this is the 29th anniversary. But on the jukebox at the bar Eric Carmen is guaranteed to play…..those jukeboxes in the diner at your table? Carmen is on. Imagine a time where all your entertainment was an AM radio pop station…..& this song comes on like EVERY HOUR. Caption : 41 years ago ——— Either Thriller was the beginning of a revolution….. ….or the end? So hard to tell…..to be 12 and see the real time effect of this phenomenon AS is was happening. But it hits different when you look at its casualties (quantity enters the conversation, video truly kills the radio star, BIGGER BIGGER BIGGER, Achievements…..& of course the most important casualty of the post Thriller effect was MJ himself, a perfectionist whose EVERY creative move hereafter must be on the level of the second coming….an event! the best! ———-I mean we all had to follow suit——and it’s hard to tell if black music culture suffered as a result. I mean on one hand, there will never be an event like this in my lifetime.
