Caption : Farewell, old soldier. That’s goodnight and goodbye to our beloved Bernard. Wilf is mentioned in dispatches next week, all safe and sound, don’t worry, but that’s the only scene Bernard was able to film. We had a wonderful time! We’d never lost touch, in all these years, so I phoned him up and asked him to come back. He sniffed and said, ‘Let me see the script.’😂 We had a wonderful readthrough with 120 people at which he was adored by one and all. A lovely dinner in Cardiff where he regaled us with tales galore, twinkling as ever. Then the shoot in Camden – you can see in Unleashed and read in next week’s DWM how much he enjoyed that. And then… we had a little more written, but it wasn’t to be; at 93 years old, the old soldier had given us his best, and stepped away. Night, Bernard, and thank you. I love you.♥️Likes : 195489

Caption : Brigit Forsyth (1940-2023) Brigit starred in the very first drama I ever wrote, Dark Season (1991). She played Miss Maitland, who saved the day by driving a bulldozer into a supercomputer! She had to have bulldozer lessons, which she loved. I went to the rehearsal rooms in North Acton and I was tongue-tied, she was the most famous person I’d ever met! Thelma! From The Likely Lads! And nothing like poor Thelma, of course, she was warm and funny and great with a muttered aside. I’d see her over the years, when I worked at Granada, because she was married to a fine old Coronation Street director, Brian Mills. Then, in 2021, Big Finish brought Dark Season back for a 30th anniversary. Brigit was retired, and not well by that stage, but she came back for a lap of victory, that old fire still burning. Caption : Roberta Taylor (1948-2024). I only worked with Roberta once, way back, ‘94, ‘95? She was delightful. Granada, back in the 90s, used to churn out soaps. Not just the big guns, but mad little shows filling gaps in the schedules. Families, Castles, Revelations, Springhill. And we developed even more that never got made. Paul Marquess, creator of Footballers’ Wives, and I invented a show called Saxon House, a twice-weekly afternoon soap set in the 1800s. And we shot a pilot, directed by Eugene Ferguson, with Roberta as the haughty and manipulative Lady Saxon. It was all servants and masters and secrets. If it had been commissioned, Paul and I planned that, after a year, two of the lead characters would turn out to be time-travellers. We then said, at the end of the second year, they’d return to the future saying ‘Now we can build the Fourth Reich!’ Heh! Imagine! Oh my God, we were young! We never told anyone our secret plans, and the show got binned anyway. But for one day, in Manchester, Saxon House lived, and we had the joy of working with a fine lady. I bet she never remembered it! I don’t think a single page or photo or pixel of Saxon House still exists. And Roberta was so much more than that, a class act and a fine actor, thanks darling. I think I’d expected a comedy of manners, dancing round cancellation culture and social media, and that’s what draws you in… only to take you deeper and deeper into darkness. The complexity and ruthlessness and truth of it is astonishing. And, somehow, ultimately, exhilarating. The 5,000 emotions playing across Karen Gillen’s eyes mean you can’t look away. Amazing.
