Pabst Blue Ribbon had made a come back in Brooklyn. Miller High Life, the champagne of beers, had never left (we served it at our wedding). I had quit smoking 5 years before, but thought it would look funny for the photo.

We were at her friend Jeremy’s party. I didn’t know really anyone which always terrifies me, but she made me feel at ease. She made me laugh and I’ve been doing it ever since.

She hates it when I post these, but when ya got someone this good ya just gotta talk about them. ❤️

Without writers there would be no stories. Without stories there would be no film or tv. There would be no need for studios or networks. There would be no need for casting directors to find actors. There would be no need for actors to say words. There would be no need for directors to direct. No need for producers to produce. No need for cinematographers, costume designers, set designers, hair and makeup artist, AD’s, Gaffers, PA’s, truck drivers, prop masters, caterers, and on and on and on and on and on.

Without writers there sure as hell would be no need for CEO’s

A film set is a small city that runs on the worlds created by writers. Pay them accordingly.

Hi friends. With all the recent articles flying, I feel compelled to weigh in. It’s no secret that I’m a Casting Director married to an actor. For the past 3 years, I’ve benefited from the flexibility provided by self-tapes as a CD, while also witnessing first-hand what it’s been like for actors.

CD me knows at the beginning of the pandemic, casting exclusively from tape was done out of necessity and concerns for safety. But in July of 2021, SAG removed the language about tapes being preferential, and yet…nothing really changed. Why? Well, budgets have been reduced/reallocated, timelines truncated, people relocated, many folks have downright refused to even try returning in-person, and simply put: it’s more efficient *for CDs* to do at least the first round via tape.

Wife-of-an-actor [and friend to even more] me recognizes all of the pros. But let’s talk about some cons.

It’s lonely. It’s tedious. If you have kids & need to tape on a weekend or have a last-minute deadline—god help you. Finding a reader can be challenging. Taping from home puts you in a vulnerable spot—it means people see where you live. You might feel compelled to invest in fancy equipment, even if people say only the acting matters. You may have to constantly move furniture or other things around. Taping with a partner can really put a strain on your relationship. Believe me.

The biggest downside? Auditioning in a vacuum. The overwhelming majority of self-tape requests come with ZERO direction, tonal notes, or context. Zip, zilch, nada. In person, CDs asked actors if they had any questions. Over tape, the opportunity for that conversation is gone. For new projects it means everything is a wild guess. You end up doing a billion takes until one finally feels “right,” send it, and cross your fingers.

Tate Ellington Instagram - Standing next to this thing on set yesterday and it made me think I was on the Death Star. 🤷‍♂️ (sidebar: I am not in fact on the Death Star.😉)

This can be a humble brag and I’m sure it is and I don’t mean for it to be. I am just truly truly thankful right now because for the last two days I have been working on a set with unbelievably wonderful people. I am also desperately hoping to have a small reunion with my one time on-screen mom, a legend of our craft. Fingers crossed for that one.

I love my job. I am terrified every second of the day, but for those few moments between action and cut I get to leave that behind. I got to do a stare off with an actor yesterday that I have watched and admired for the past 20 years. A man who could in reality bend me into a pretzel, but for 8 seconds I got to image that maybe, just maybe he COULDN’t bend me into a pretzel.

I love y’all! That’s it. Sitting here at a coffee shop trying not to look like the weirdo crying in public, but maybe they will just think that someone dear to me passed away and they won’t judge to harshly.😃

I love my wife, I love my kids, and I love you my friends.

Tate Ellington Instagram - Quite possibly one of the greatest gifts I have ever received. It shall be passed down to my girls and I pray someday they pass it on to their children.

@cdfioe knows how much I treasure this film. Even more so I treasure this scene. It will always be one of the dearest to me. I still say lines from the USS Indianapolis monologue every day. It is to me one of the most superbly delivered monologues of all time.

Jaws was the first film I ever watched on VHS. I still remember the day my dad brought home our first VCR along with this film. It terrified the hell out of me and it was a long time before I felt safe taking a bath. I have still never really cared for the ocean.😬😧 I love this film.❤️

Jaws was one of the films that was watched countless times with my Dad and Paw Paw at the deer camp every year during hunting season. We sat in the cabin with bellies full of fried venison and cornbread watching a 24” tube tv and enjoyed. These memories are some that I treasure the most. I still imagine us sitting around the table like they do in this scene having a drink together and laughing till it hurts. Fortunately, Paw Paw did not relate a story of his friends being eaten alive by sharks.

You just can’t know how much this means to me @cdfioe. I love you so so much.❤️❤️

I miss the feeling of knowing I nailed it. I miss the feeling of knowing I blew it. I miss it all, the good and the bad.

I know it will never go back to the way it was. I know I am now the old guard that “remembers the way it used to be”, but boy do I miss it. ❤️
