Virginia Trioli Instagram - A few words from me … Before I returned to work in April, after my long break over summer, I informed my managers here at ABC Radio Melbourne that I needed to step down from the position of presenting Mornings on this station. And I will do that on Friday September 15 – almost exactly four years to the day that I took on this role. Instead, I have been incredibly lucky to be asked by the ABC to move to television, to present a new prime time arts show for ABC TV in 2024. After a difficult period of dealing with multiple illnesses in my family, and with the realisation that you’re lucky if you get EVEN ONE warning about how long you have on this earth with the people you love, I now find myself at that stage of life that requires me to live and work in a different way. And after almost 20 years of working to the hardest alarms that the ABC has to offer – presenting Mornings on ABC Radio Sydney, 11 years as the founding anchor of News Breakfast, and on Melbourne mornings here – it’s a change that feels unavoidable for me right now. When I was offered this position, I did not hesitate to say yes – both because of my deep love of radio and this ABC Melbourne audience, and also because of my commitment to the task of holding those in power to account. That hasn’t always made me many friends with those in power. But that goes way back with me … I was never going to be any different! I have many many thanks to make – but they can come later. Right now -- I want to thank you, the listeners. We have been through a great deal. Fires and pandemic and floods and a cost of living crisis that is re-shaping our understanding of what is possible for us and our families in Australia. Some of our years together in Melbourne have been very very hard indeed. And only you and I will ever know what being here for each other day after day has been like over the last four years. Don’t ever let anyone try to tell you what that was, and what that was like. We lived it. We know it. It was an incredible lineup and became an incendiary, transporting night under the spring moon and it was the last time I saw this brilliant, angry, joyous and sad woman sing. Each of the artists chose songs to covet, songs to share, songs of their own. Rickie Lee sang Gangsters Paradise, a performance I’ll never forget, and Sinead blew us away with War, Serve Somebody and Nothing Compares 2 U. Today comes with such sad news but I don’t want to remember the trauma and sorrows today, I want to remember a woman with a voice like wind through a forest: otherworldly and beautiful. Virginia Trioli Instagram - Right to the end, it's been a show brave enough to take us into the heart of family darkness, framed always by trauma and neglect, choked with dark laughter and lifted by translucent performances. Yet again, you start the episode, and then you don't exhale til it's over. The final episode of @succession never missed. All the grand themes were there - the missing father, the dreadful mother, the sibling rivalry, vanity, ego, hurt, pathos and bathos. Perfect. The little touches in this final episode were splendid too: Greg and the original cowbell he knocked off the table when he visited Logan's apartment in the very first episode; Lady Caroline luring her children to Barbados not to support Roman, but so her grifter upper-class twit husband could try and con them into a barely legal investment; the torture of watching Shiv, Roman and Kendall come together in the kitchen in genuine joy and play, all the while knowing this communion could not possibly last; the video of Logan singing Irish ballads with his eldest son and the hangers-on, while the three kids watch - excluded, ignorant of this fun, so far from his company. What did Shiv say? "It was so warm in the light." In the end, Logan won. As he said, he always wins. And the win was the most awful one of all, because the patriarch's success depended on his children never being raised with the maturity, independence and capacity to ever take him on and beat him. None of the kids were ever going to get the prize, and in the end it doesn't really matter that Tom does (he'll be canned by Matsson eventually) but the decision now permanently sets the course for the kids that was originally charted by their brutal parents: Shiv to become her mother as Logan-lite Tom eventually shrugs her off for a newer model; Roman to descend into lonely nihilism (still pining for Gerry with her drink of choice) and poor Kendall, with little more than billions to help him make sense of a world that has now forever shrunk to the size of his eternal childhood fears. Virginia Trioli Instagram - A big shout-out to our neighbourhood baker and roaster, @smallbatchroast and their baker @charliemduffy for winning Easter. I’m a hot cross bun devotee from my early 80s youth, rising on Good Friday at 5am to bake my own for a huge annual gathering of friends, because the only buns you could buy back then were from supermarkets. Then came @babkafitzroy and everything changed. I no longer have to make them because these bakers are way better than I could ever be. I still miss Dolcetti in West Melbourne and Marianna’s extraordinary brioche buns - but these beauties are a brilliant replacement. All the key elements are there: the spice, the peel and the glaze. The bun has a great give to it and the cross is bloody genius: instead of that line of Clag that bakes into cement, they are clever lines of crisp croissant pastry. 👌 A happy Easter to you all. Virginia Trioli - 6.1K Likes - A few words from me … Before I returned to work in April, after my long break over summer, I informed my managers here at ABC Radio Melbourne that I needed to step down from the position of presenting Mornings on this station. And I will do that on Friday September 15 – almost exactly four years to the day that I took on this role. Instead, I have been incredibly lucky to be asked by the ABC to move to television, to present a new prime time arts show for ABC TV in 2024. After a difficult period of dealing with multiple illnesses in my family, and with the realisation that you’re lucky if you get EVEN ONE warning about how long you have on this earth with the people you love, I now find myself at that stage of life that requires me to live and work in a different way. And after almost 20 years of working to the hardest alarms that the ABC has to offer – presenting Mornings on ABC Radio Sydney, 11 years as the founding anchor of News Breakfast, and on Melbourne mornings here – it’s a change that feels unavoidable for me right now. When I was offered this position, I did not hesitate to say yes – both because of my deep love of radio and this ABC Melbourne audience, and also because of my commitment to the task of holding those in power to account. That hasn’t always made me many friends with those in power. But that goes way back with me … I was never going to be any different! I have many many thanks to make – but they can come later. Right now -- I want to thank you, the listeners. We have been through a great deal. Fires and pandemic and floods and a cost of living crisis that is re-shaping our understanding of what is possible for us and our families in Australia. Yet again, you start the episode, and then you don't exhale til it's over. The final episode of @succession never missed. All the grand themes were there - the missing father, the dreadful mother, the sibling rivalry, vanity, ego, hurt, pathos and bathos. Perfect. The little touches in this final episode were splendid too: Greg and the original cowbell he knocked off the table when he visited Logan's apartment in the very first episode; Lady Caroline luring her children to Barbados not to support Roman, but so her grifter upper-class twit husband could try and con them into a barely legal investment; the torture of watching Shiv, Roman and Kendall come together in the kitchen in genuine joy and play, all the while knowing this communion could not possibly last; the video of Logan singing Irish ballads with his eldest son and the hangers-on, while the three kids watch - excluded, ignorant of this fun, so far from his company. What did Shiv say? "It was so warm in the light." In the end, Logan won. As he said, he always wins. And the win was the most awful one of all, because the patriarch's success depended on his children never being raised with the maturity, independence and capacity to ever take him on and beat him. None of the kids were ever going to get the prize, and in the end it doesn't really matter that Tom does (he'll be canned by Matsson eventually) but the decision now permanently sets the course for the kids that was originally charted by their brutal parents: Shiv to become her mother as Logan-lite Tom eventually shrugs her off for a newer model; Roman to descend into lonely nihilism (still pining for Gerry with her drink of choice) and poor Kendall, with little more than billions to help him make sense of a world that has now forever shrunk to the size of his eternal childhood fears. I’m a hot cross bun devotee from my early 80s youth, rising on Good Friday at 5am to bake my own for a huge annual gathering of friends, because the only buns you could buy back then were from supermarkets. Then came @babkafitzroy and everything changed. I no longer have to make them because these bakers are way better than I could ever be. I still miss Dolcetti in West Melbourne and Marianna’s extraordinary brioche buns - but these beauties are a brilliant replacement. All the key elements are there: the spice, the peel and the glaze. The bun has a great give to it and the cross is bloody genius: instead of that line of Clag that bakes into cement, they are clever lines of crisp croissant pastry. 👌 A happy Easter to you all.
