I promise this is actually not a “re-create the photo” post. Saturday Richert & I were in Palm Springs, hanging out by the pool in the sun, and I asked Richert to take some pics of me working on something new, a crochet project (which I’ll post about later). Today (Wednesday) I’m with my mom in San Francisco, just helping her organize things a little ’cause she’s moving. I’m finding all these photos I’ve never seen before and scanning them, and some of them are a bunch of pics of my family when I was a kid at Santa Cruz beach, where we went often and had lots of great times; great memories. And several of the pictures are of me working on a lanyard, in the sun; I was really into lanyards when I was a kid partly ’cause when I went to summer camp the crafts were the only thing that held my interest. I have always made things with my hands and my mind. My favorite projects are the mentally stimulating undertakings, particularly in fiber arts. I like dashing off simple things but I also looove making BIG projects that other people don’t have the skill or patience for, like @westknits patterns. When I’m knitting, or writing, I can go into a zone for hours and be shocked when I snap out of it and look at the clock. I found this picture of me at the beach and I went ‘wait a second…’ and eventually I remembered and pulled up the picture Richert took 4 days before. Isn’t that kinda amazing? Part of the parenting process is pondering how much of your child’s identity is determined by your parenting, and how much of it is Just There. Queer people have launched a revolutionary movement over time that urges the world to understand that we were Born This Way. I look at these two pictures side by side and I feel so many cool things, but I think the main one is this sense of peacefulness and reassurance, a confirmation that, over the half a century of time between these two photographs, I’ve understood more and more who I am at my core, and while I began the journey unsure of who and what I was, as many of us are, I now feel rather victorious, because clearly, all this time, I have been Spot On Right. I hope everyone can look at themselves then and now and feel that. B U

Congratulations @constancewu for being honored last night with the @apexforyouth Inspiration Award. #ApexForYouth is a dynamic non-profit org serving the myriad needs of our most precious, talented, valuable, vulnerable, and underserved AAPI youth, in many aspects of their day to day lives; everything from academic to counseling to mentorship to mental health to athletics. The work they’re doing is remarkable and very worthwhile, and how they’re bringing together the #AAPI community to pitch in to this mission is what Family’s all about.
