Stretching between the shores of Alaska and Russia, this chain of 14 volcanoes and 55 smaller land masses make up what is known as the Aleutian Islands… one of the most remote and difficult landscapes I’ve photographed – due to the harsh storms the frequent the Bering sea that often shrouds them in thick clouds & fog. In the past, I had set out to these islands with the goal of surfing in mind.. but in 2018, I received a grant from Conservation International to document the Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge – focusing more on showing the scope of the landscape and it’s largely undisturbed beauty.
We caught a window in the weather – so I grabbed my camera & jumped in a small plane… resulting in some of the most unforgettable aerial views of my career.

During a catalog shoot, along with the task of artfully showing a new product, I think it’s crucial to convey sense of place, practicality, emotion, and what made that particular moment and person special. Ideally inspiring someone to find their own version of that while using that jacket or backpack… I wanted that feeling to emerge in this campaign I shot in 2022 for the Backcountry fall catalog so I felt that Iceland was the right place. We jumped from the Vestmann Islands to þörsmork – all along the South Coast where you can get soaked in a rain coat under a huge waterfall or stand on a black sand beach next to blue ice just a couple of hours, bringing a natural diversity into the commercial task which is what I often aim for.

Commonly recognized by scientists & conservationists as California’s most extensive stretch of coastal dunes, Oceano is a huge playground that I frequented a ton in my childhood and a place I love to shoot – due to the striking lines and shadows that appear on clear evenings. Just a couple of months ago, I invited a few special guests to the Central Coast to film Season 2 of the @sonyalpha First Take… a series of episodes showing off the beauty of my hometown paired with sharing the stories of each Sony Artisan and their photographic perspectives on landscapes I’ve captured for many years… we’re gearing up to share the first episode soon – stay tuned for the release !
The canyon shown above is home to the Rio Palena – a powerful river system teeming with salmon and trout that eventually feeds into the South Pacific traveling through 150 miles of striking landscapes. This particular night, i noticed a storm rolling in close to the @elevenexperience lodge and decided to put the drone up (despite significant wind) to capture the sunset and idyllic lenticular clouds that are commonly seen in Patagonia, brushed by wind swirling at high speeds. During this assignment, I also had the opportunity to spend a lot of time flying with @aeroalerce – affording me a more in depth intake of the landscape but still just an introduction into over 2,300 islands that sit off the coast of Chile and over 800 fjords. It’s still a little hard to process the sheer amount of landscape here and I’m excited to continue to explore it

2 years ago exactly I rode through this landscape on my bike. I have dreamt of coming back here many times in the same conditions… moving slower and trying to absorb the landscape once again to see what it has to show me.. to teach me.
Tomorrow we head out to Landmannalaugar to traverse the famous Laugavagur trail on skis and then onwards to Mælifellssandur and hopefully a successful crossing of Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. I’ve been dreaming of this trip for a while now and hope I can be patient with this beat up body of mine 😅 and my continually childlike awe for this landscape.
@lillebeggen thanks for the scouting mission ✈️ !
það Eru Margar Undur Í Höfuðkúpu – meaning “There are Many Wonders in a Cow’s head. A phrase in Icelanders use to say that the world is a strange place or the world is nuts… there’s another one: Enginn Verður óbarinn Biskup which translates to “Nobody becomes an Unbeaten Bishop”… in other words – any worthy achievement requires trial and error or no pain, no gain.
These little sayings rang a little extra true while hunting for good surf all around Iceland in winter of 2021 – on a shoot for Billabong, so we decided we’d make a film about the trip based on these phrases and few more – guiding our ethos while dealing with icy waters, long days in elements, or feeding pancakes to the dog. The film is called “Many Wonders” – you can watch the whole thing at link in my bio
