During this assignment, I also had the opportunity to spend a lot of time flying with @aeroalerce - affording me a more in depth intake of the landscape but still just an introduction into over 2,300 islands that sit off the coast of Chile and over 800 fjords. It’s still a little hard to process the sheer amount of landscape here and I’m excited to continue to explore it

Chris Burkard Instagram – Stretching between the shores of Alaska and Russia, this chain of 14 volcanoes and 55 smaller land masses make up what is known as the Aleutian Islands… one of the most remote and difficult landscapes I’ve photographed – due to the harsh storms the frequent the Bering sea that often shrouds them in thick clouds & fog. In the past, I had set out to these islands with the goal of surfing in mind.. but in 2018, I received a grant from Conservation International to document the Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge – focusing more on showing the scope of the landscape and it’s largely undisturbed beauty. We caught a window in the weather – so I grabbed my camera & jumped in a small plane… resulting in some of the most unforgettable aerial views of my career.
Chris Burkard Instagram – það Eru Margar Undur Í Höfuðkúpu – meaning “There are Many Wonders in a Cow’s head. A phrase in Icelanders use to say that the world is a strange place or the world is nuts… there’s another one: Enginn Verður óbarinn Biskup which translates to “Nobody becomes an Unbeaten Bishop”… in other words – any worthy achievement requires trial and error or no pain, no gain. These little sayings rang a little extra true while hunting for good surf all around Iceland in winter of 2021 – on a shoot for Billabong, so we decided we’d make a film about the trip based on these phrases and few more – guiding our ethos while dealing with icy waters, long days in elements, or feeding pancakes to the dog.
