I played Prior Walter in #AngelsinAmerica (pts 1 and 2) for almost a year in San Francisco in the early 90s. Lise Bruneau is the beautiful, athletic angel. Mark Wing-Davey directed, and sent me this dog-eared pic this morning. Sometimes you have experiences that are more transformative than you realize at the time. I was young. Had only been out of school a couple years, was always hungry for the next thing. I didn’t know yet how rare it would be in a career to encounter writing like Tony Kushner’s. Genius is not rampant. What a lucky, lucky boy I am—the extraordinary people I’ve been fortunate to work with in this unreliable line of work. I encounter them still. I am immensely grateful. (Also—I invented koosh ball during rehearsals for this. #iykyk)
I didn’t start acting til my last year of college. Sometimes they cast undergrads in grad school productions, as was the case here. This was LUANN HAMPTON LAVERTY OBERLANDER at the since renamed Glen Hughes Playhouse, @uwdrama. Baby me and Jeff Klein had a violently competitive checker game in this scene, and that’s Charlie Shoemaker in the back, if memory serves. No clue where everybody is now, but I sure had fun and learned a lot. I don’t know who sent me this, but thank you. It is the only record I have of this experience, and it brought back a lot of memories.
