My next solo exhibition “The Head Versus The Heart” opens a few days after my 50th birthday next month at the WAG Gallery in Tokyo Japan. These drawings deal with listening to your head or your heart when making important life choices, and reminding yourself that the pen will always kick the swords ass. Curated by @hidden_champion and hosted by @ftcjp

My neighbor, friend, and 12 time world pizza champion Tony Gemignani @capopizza rented out two billboards in our neighborhood, and gave them out to six different artists over six months to help celebrate North Beach. I was proud to be included in this project, and have so much love and respect for Tony and his infinite generosity. Tee shirts of my design are available from my friends at The North Beach Pipeline, @itsnorthbeachpipeline 1335 Grant Avenue, here in the greatest neighborhood on earth. A buzzy self-important gnat rested, without permission, on a bull’s horn. After the gnat had rested, he apologized profusely to the bull for landing on him. The bull replied, “No need to apologize, I was totally unaware of your presence.” Moral: The smaller the mind, the greater the conceit. This drawing is from a project I am working on with my Mother. She writes these stories based on traditional fables, and I use her words to inspire these drawings. Screen Prints of this will be available at my upcoming show in Tokyo in April.
A cat and a monkey were pets in the same house. They were great friends and got up to all sorts of mischief, especially concerning food and how to get it. One day they were trying to figure out how to get hold of the chestnuts roasting on the hearth. The cunning monkey convinced the cat he was the more skillful at retrieval and said, “Pull them out of the fire and I’ll divide them between us.” The cat worked hard at retrieving the chestnuts each time singeing her paw severely. And each time she got one out, the monkey ate it up. When the master of the house came in, the two ran away, the cat with a burnt paw and no chestnuts. From then on she had little to do with the monkey. Moral: The flatterer seeks some benefit at your expense. This drawing is from a project I am working on with my Mother. She writes these stories based on traditional fables, and I use her words to inspire these drawings. Screen Prints of this will be available at my upcoming show in Tokyo in April.
A poor fisherman lived only on what he caught each day. On one very bad day, he caught a single small fish. While he was putting it in his basket, the fish spoke. “Spare me, I am so little. Put me back and I’lll grow into a bigger meal.” The fisherman replied, “I’d be foolish to throw you back. However small you are, you are better than nothing.” Moral: A small gain is worth more than a large promise This drawing is from a project I am working on with my Mother. She writes these stories based on traditional fables, and I use her words to inspire these drawings. This original drawing will be available at my upcoming show in Tokyo in April.
One sunny day a brash grasshopper chose to sing his very loud raspy song under a tree containing the hollow of an old cranky sleeping owl. Awakened by the noise, she yelled at the grasshopper to be quiet. He belligerently replied he had the right to be there. Seeing that arguing was futile, the owl instead flattered him. She invited him to her hollow to have a drink of Apollo’s wine which would improve his already lovely song. The foolish grasshopper jumped to the owl’s hollow where she promptly ate him. Moral: Do not let flattery throw you into your enemy’s clutches. This drawing is from a project I am working on with my Mother. She writes these stories based on traditional fables, and I use her words to inspire these drawings. Screen Prints of this will be available at my upcoming show in Tokyo in April.
