In July of 2004, a promo-only single of “Call My Name,” the fifth track on Musicology, was released in North America. On February 13th 2005, “Call My Name” won the Grammy for “Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.” It was one of two awards that Prince took home that night.
When asked if he considers himself a student or teacher of Musicology, Prince responded, “I’d like to think I’m both.” Watch the Musicology era interview with Prince, now available on the Prince YouTube page at the link in bio, and don’t forget to follow @officialpaisleypark for event updates and special announcements! 💜
Prince’s fourth song on Musicology, “Life ‘O’ The Party,” was originally recorded on September 1, 2002. This smooth number is filled with references to Michael Jackson, Dr. Dre, and even Prince’s saxophonist Candy Dulfer who played her horn, and sang on the track with Chance Howard. As we continue to celebrate 20 years of Musicology, we are excited to shine a spotlight on “United States Of Division,” one of Prince’s many powerful protest songs that witnessed him boldly confronting several of the the social and political issues that continue to plague us today. Recorded in January 2004, “United States Of Division” is a rare Prince track initially offered as a virtual B-side download for “Cinnamon Girl” exclusively from Prince’s NPG Music Club and eventually as a non-LP bonus track for the UK CD single of “Cinnamon Girl,” but has not been distributed via streaming services until now. “United States Of Division” is now available to stream at the link in bio!

The sixth track on Musicology is “Cinnamon Girl,” a song that Prince released as the album’s second commercially available single after the title track. Prince enlisted Rhonda Smith, Chance Howard and Candy Dulfer to contribute additional vocals. The song was listed as #43 in the Guardian’s ranking of Prince’s best tracks, calling it a “straightforwardly enjoyable song,” that listeners “could have imagined him writing circa Around the World in a Day.”
Track 7 on Musicology, “What Do U Want Me 2 Do?,” is a smooth jazzy funk number originally recorded in the summer of 2002, that includes an Italian spoken-word portion at the end from Ornella Bonaccorsi. An early version of “What Do U Want Me 2 Do?,” was streamed four months before the release of Musicology, via Prince’s NPG Music Club. That initial version did not contain the spoken coda.
“If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life,” is the ninth track on Musicology. Originally demoed by engineer Hans-Martin Buff on February 11, 1999 at @officialpaisleypark (as “The Man In Your Life”), it was eventually reworked at Metalworks Studios, in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Ultimately, the song included John Blackwell, Jr. on drums, and Candy Dulfer, Maceo Parker and Greg Boyer on horns with Prince playing everything else. The daytime portion of Musicology’s 20th Anniversary event was that tour guests were treated to performances by the Plymouth and St. Paul locations of The School of Rock all day leading up to the main event. As Prince said about Musicology “I think that kids need to hear live music so they know what it’s really about, and then hopefully they’ll pick up an instrument and keep this thing goin’..” Thank you to School of Rock for doing just that! #musicology #paisleypark #schoolofrock #prince4ever
