We are so grateful for our landlord’s patience and support as we turn to our Kusimama Africa/No White Saviors community to keep our space open. The same space our community was so instrumental in raising funds when it was just a few thoughts on paper.  Named after Thomas Sankara, a Pan-Africanist, revolutionary, egalitarian, freedom fighter and President of Burkina Faso, the Sankara Pan-African Library and Café opened in Kampala, Uganda on January 3rd of 2022 during the pandemic to serve as a physical and brave safe space for community gatherings and dialogue, readings and storytelling, quiet study and reflection. The library and café provide free, low-cost and accessible safe spaces for community gatherings, virtual and live engagements, Pan-African educational resources and training for the local community. The existence of the library is because of the generosity and inspiration of the Kusimama Africa/No White Saviors supporters, followers and friends. We are fundraising to help pay for $24,000.00 in rent owed to the landlord of the property. Due to the global pandemic in 2022 and the subsequent global economic crisis and slowdown (whose effects are still being felt today), the Sankara Library has faced financial difficulties and is in rent arrears of $24,000.00 that was due at the end of June. The rent is $2,000.00 because the library and café space and compound are beautiful, and are located in the prime living and commercial neighbourhood in Kampala, centrally located and easily accessible to the local community via multiple forms of local transportation. Our fundraiser will allow us to expand the library services, the café space to allow the library and café to be self-sustaining through increased revenue.
