Carla Valentine Instagram – My Halloween countdown continues with 17 mini coffins ⚰️ ⚰️ This has to be one of my favourite stories EVER and I just want to get it out there, particularly to you guys not from the UK who may not know it: One June afternoon in 1836 five young boys accidentally stumbled upon something spooky and extraordinary. They’d spent the day mucking around hunting for rabbit warrens on Arthur’s Seat (the main peak of a group of mountains in Edinburgh) when they made a startling discovery at the entrance to a small cave on the north-eastern face of the hill: a horde of intricately-carved miniature figures set in coffins ⚰️ The 17 tiny coffins had lain undisturbed for an indeterminate amount of time beneath just a few thin slabs of slate. They were neatly laid out in three tiers: two lower rows of eight and a third supposedly just begun. Unfortunately the boys decided to pelt each other with them so only 8 of these coffins survive to the present day, and are on display in the National Museum of Scotland (@nationalmuseumsscotland) But who made them and what were they doing there? Initial theories obviously included Witchcraft and Demonology but more modern theories abound about them perhaps representing the 17 victims of Edinburgh’s Burke and Hare. (I’ve mentioned them before: they weren’t Body Snatchers, they were simply murderers.) But it gets weirder…In December 2014, the Museum received a mysterious package: a beautifully-made replica of one of the coffins, cryptically entitled ‘XVIII’ with a note. You have to check out more about these amazing objects on the website www.nms.ac.uk
