My dad made my dreams possible, so when I can, I try to make his dreams come true too.
This was from Easter Egg Roll last year and Iām so excited to attend again this year!
If your family is attending this year, you can find me on the main stage from 11:45-12:15pm and in the reading nook at 12:45pm reading Reach for the Stars!
Happy Easter š£šš
The option to dream is not an option for all. Hereās to the parents who make their kidās dreams possible āØ
People often ask how I got into STEM. Did I go to space camp as a kid? Did I see a rocket launch with my parents? Did I take apart radios with my mom?
No, I did none of those things.
I was incredibly practical. I googled all the majors one could major in and I looked at their starting salaries.
I wanted to do for my family what my dad had done for his. Reach higher so that money would not be a worry.
A few years ago I told this to a group of students at a fancy private high school and one of the kids asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks: What would you have wanted to be if you didnāt have to worry about money?
He was referring to a safety net. That thing you can fall back on when your first couple of dreams donāt pan out.
It was so foreign to me. I didnāt come from trust funds and safety nets. I had one shot and I needed to make it count.
I just got lucky because I ended up falling in love with STEM! With the adventure! With the discovery! With the constant curiosity of it all! And now I work to get your kids and your family excited about it too šāŗļø
Like Harry Potter, but real!
But that question sits with me. What would any of us choose to dream if you didnāt have to worry about money?
Today Iām extremely privileged to have the capacity to dream big bold dreams. And my kids will too. But itās because of him and my mom and all the work they put in to support our family.
May we all eventually have the capacity to Reach for the Stars āØ
Comment EYEBALLS for a map of the eclipse and links to certified eclipse glasses.
šš»āāļøWhen will it be near me?
š depends, but sometime between 12:30pm – 3:30pm local time. Comment EYEBALLS for a map with exact timing.
šš»āāļøHow long will it last?
š The moon will move across the sun for a few hours, but totality (darkness!) will last 3-4 minutes along the path!
šš»āāļøDoes it matter if Iām on the path of 100% totality? (This means the moon covers 100% of the sun)
š if you want to witness the sky go DARK then YES. <99% just wonāt be the same. BUT itāll be cool regardless and you should grab some glasses to watch the moon partially block out the sun!
šš»āāļøHow do I know if my glasses are certified?
š(1) make sure they say ISO 12312-2 on them (this is the safety rating) (2) you can check to see if the manufacturer is on the American Astronomical Societyās list of approved suppliers at eclipse.aas.org/eye-safety/viewers-filters
Iāll share tips on viewing this will littles in later videos!

š„µYour eyes focus the energy of the sun back to your retina. Donāt let your retinas become the balloon š«£
ā ļø there are MORE reported eye injuries after Solar Eclipses – especially in children. So itās important to emphasize safety during an eclipse!
āļø wait, why is that?? is it MORE dangerous to look at the sun during an eclipse??
šš»āāļøno. More people are just looking at the sun during this time.
So make sure weāre all wearing certified eclipse glasses and ensuring our children do the same! š

When youāre a woman in STEM youāre used to being one of the only women in the room, on the team, and at the table. We grew up thinking that meant we needed to *compete* with other women to earn our spot as THE woman on the team.
As you grow older you learn how ridiculous that concept is. Completing with other women only serves everyone ELSE whoās in the room.
A rising tide lifts all women. As @kelliegerardi says – lonely at the top? Donāt know her š

āYou look like a scientist.ā
A simple phrase but something I made sure to tell EVERY child who said they dream of becoming a scientist when theyāre older.
The face of a child when I would ask them:
āHas anyone ever told you you look like an astronaut/scientist/engineer? Well you do! I know these things!ā
is the memory I will hold most tightly from my book tour š„¹
š«¶š»so grateful to @adambearne and @npr for covering this. (And especially grateful to Adamās wife and children who loved my show and were the real impetus for covering this story š)

So excited to read my book Reach for the Stars at the Easter Egg Roll this year!
The little girl that this is written about is now 4.5 years old. I wrote this book in the weeks after she was born, writing down all the dreams I had for her at each stage of her life. Theyāre dreams that every parent/caretaker has for their child.
Sheāll be in the audience at the White House watching her mom read the book she wrote for her.
Bring tissues, because this will be a tear jerker. š„ŗš„²

When I do speaking engagements I spend a lot of time writing out what Iām going to say and practicing the performance of that speech. But up until recently I didnāt put a lot of thought into what I wore during that performance.
In many spaces I occupy (science TV Host, aerospace industry professional) I already stand out as a woman. So I would typically wear all black – no need to draw *more* attention to my uniqueness.
But now I put just as much thought into what Iām wearing as I do what Iām saying. Thereās now intention behind what I say, how I say it, and what Iām wearing as I say it.
This look is much more authentic to my personality and I hope it gives a different expectation of what someone can look like in STEMš
It gives me more confidence that thereās intention behind *everything* I brought that day. And honestlyā¦it is simply more fun!
Hereās to bringing your authentic self to whatever space you occupy – even if youāre different – ESPECIALLY if youāre differentš§š

My book just made the list TWICE!!!!
Comment SCIENCE CLUB to order this NYTimes Best Selling Book!!
Hereās why this is a big deal – if an author is going to make THE LIST then itās going to happen in the first week. Why is that? Because all pre-orders count toward the first week of sales.
That means I had SIX months of sales working for me in that first week. The 2nd week? Literally just one true week of sales. ONE.
To be able to get on it a second time was not even on my dream list because that was such an impossible bar. But you proved me wrong!!
Thank you š„¹
