On Monday I turned thirty and crossed the threshold into a new decade of life ✨ I am so grateful for all of the gifts, the lessons, and the wonderful people that this past decade has brought me. What a blessing to have crossed paths with each of you. ♥️ It would be impossible to capture it in a few lines, and ridiculous to try, but here are a few highlights that I’m savoring: ✨ reading books that will stay with me forever and ever (and there was light by jacques lusseyran always comes to mind) ✨ becoming an auntie to 3 more nieces 1 new nephew (then gaining 3 more, by marriage!) ✨ marrying @joeyciccoline on a perfect Summer morning in Iceland ✨ every bit of artistic creation collaboration I was part of: writing producing my first short film, releasing a single (Holy Magic!), guest starring in some wonderful shows playing lead roles in my first features ✨ organizing fighting for a better world with some of the most wonderful humans I know through @amnestyusa ✨ the most awe-inspiring travels (mostly with @joeyciccoline @amber.wms.ford and @elizabethblloyd 😍) ✨ playing Betsy in @cobrakaiseries — it brings me so much joy to be part of the Karate Kid Universe, and to see the way it brings people together across generations. 🥹🐍 ✨ feeling so, so tiny in the Redwood Forest ✨ spontaneously driving the whole Blue Ridge Parkway with my sister and finding incredible folk music history other hidden gems along the way ✨ meeting @w_potrzebie by chance in New York City when I helped him find his bus stop, then having a friendship that has spanned almost a decade, two continents, and tons of sweet adventures 🥹 ✨ adopting a tiny backyard urchin (kitten) that brings me an outsize amount of joy every single day ✨ discovering the pure happiness of growing flowers ✨ getting to take my lovely mom to Europe (thanks to @kpalmerenator !) ✨ the kindness goodness of everyone I’ve met through @in.the.firelight and the profound connection I feel with each of you your stories 🥹

“Within the grip of winter, it is almost impossible to imagine the spring. The gray perished landscape is shorn of color. Only bleakness meets the eye; everything seems severe and edged. Winter is the oldest season; it has some quality of the absolute. Yet beneath the surface of winter, the miracle of spring is already in preparation; the cold is relenting; seeds are wakening up. Colors are beginning to imagine how they will return. Then, imperceptibly, somewhere one bug opens and the symphony of renewal is no longer reversible. From the black heart of winter a miraculous, breathing plenitude of color emerges. The beauty of nature insists on taking its time. Everything is prepared. Nothing is rushed. The rhythm of emergence is a gradual slow beat always inching its way forward; change remains faithful to itself until the new unfolds in the full confidence of true arrival. Because nothing is abrupt, the beginning of spring nearly always catches us unawares. It is there before we see it; and then we can look nowhere without seeing it.” – John O’Donohue Happy Winter Solstice, dear, beloved ones. I hope this one finds you cozy, and safe, and hopeful ♥️ 📷: @joeyciccoline

“A life’s work is not a series of stepping-stones onto which we calmly place our feet, but more like an ocean crossing where there is no path, only a heading, a direction, which, of itself, is in conversation with the elements.” – David Whyte ♥️ A ((very)) belated post to celebrate @joeyciccoline — whose birthday was a couple of weeks ago! I deeply cherish the gift of navigating the “ocean crossing” of life with such a kind & wonderful & thoughtful soul. I love you 🥰🌿

I’m late posting these, but our first unofficial in-person @in.the.firelight gathering deserves a permanent spot on my feed! 🥹 I get pretty overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of people sometimes — how we can each be so utterly unique and yet have so much that connects us, too. Saturday night was an affirming, cozy reminder of that. ♥️ The fact that this time last year almost all of you lovely humans were complete strangers to me is wild to think about. I feel so lucky that in this vast, chaotic world, our paths have crossed and our stories’ have intertwined here in this little moment. (Each and every one of y’all are so special and inspiring to me, in your own way 🥲) And to anyone who might be reading this right now, feeling disconnected, lonely, or like you haven’t found “your people” — they’re out there, I promise!! And they want to find you, too. ♥️

This beautiful song has captured my whole heart. ♥️ Ailein duinn (Dark-Haired Alan) is a traditional Scottish Gaelic ballad — said to be written by Annag Chaimbeul (Annie Campbell) after her fiancé Ailein Moireasdan (Alan Morrison) was caught in a storm and lost at sea in the Spring or 1788. The story goes that Annie wasted away from the grief, and could be heard walking the shoreline singing this song — calling out for her lost love… 💔 A few months later, she succumbed to her grief and died of a broken heart. There was not enough soil to bury her on the barren island of Scalpay, so her father placed her coffin on a boat to transport her body to another island. A storm swiftly rolled in, and swept her coffin out to sea. It is said that Annie’s coffin washed up on the very same island where Alan’s body had been found. 🌊♥️🐚 There are many versions of the story and the lyrics — and I am fairly certain that this English translation does not match the Scottish Gaelic I am singing here — but I find all of the versions so beautiful… ✨ “How sorrowful I am When I rise early in the morning Ò hì, I would go with you Hì ri bhò hò ru bhì Hì ri bhò hò rinn o ho Dark-haired Alan, ò hì, I would go with you If the sand be your pillow If the seaweed be your bed” I don’t quite know how to explain it, but folk music is medicine to me. Is it so with you? ♥️ *please forgive me any pronunciation errors – this was my first attempt at Scottish Gaelic, which I am learning by ear from Flora MacNeil’s 1953 recording ☺️ #aileinduinn #folk #folksong #celtic #scottishgaelic #singer #singersongwriter #nature #wistful #heartbreak #ballad #poem #storytelling #soulmedicine
My mom worked so hard to organize the most wonderful family reunion this past weekend, and we had over 100 family members come from around the country for it! I cherish this family and this beautiful part of Appalachia that unites all of us. I loved every minute of reconnecting with all y’all. 🥲
