I’ll admit – I was intimidated by Carl when I first met him. Even when I was suited up in my armor, I was so aware of his size…not just his physical mass, but his confidence and swagger. He knew the impact he had in this sense but, instead of trying to make himself smaller to make people comfortable, he made his generosity and curiosity bigger to welcome people in. His seeking and delight in discovery is what I will remember the most. His career spanned decades, but he never tired of talking about the craft of acting. He had a student mindset, and whenever he directed something, he genuinely wanted feedback. He’d text when an episode was about to air and he’d say “Please, tell me what you think. I really want to know.”
He approached the craft as a human being first and foremost, no matter what world we were exploring. When we’d get frustrated with technical aspects on set, he brought it back to “what do these people need deep down?” We shared o love of theater, and he came to see me in a production of King Lear where the phenomenal Joe Morton played Lear. He took the time to stay afterwards and talk about what intrigued him.
I had the best time getting him to goof off at conventions, whether we were posing for a prom picture, capturing a jump shot, or hosting a push-up cosplay contest during our panel. Speaking of panels – I absolutely loved sharing the stage for Q&A panels with him. His stories were always vivid and personal, but he cracked me up when someone would ask him a complex question about similarities between two seemingly disparate characters and he’d say “I got paid to do both of them.” He delighted in the craft, but he was also very practical about it; he never lost sight of the humans underneath the characters.
I’m in shock, as all of us are, that he’s gone. He always seemed so robust, so full of life. The thought of him stopping was impossible.
To his kids and family- our hearts are with you. Thank you for sharing him with us.

#Throwback to a year ago when I had so much fun at @starwarscelebration that I lost my voice! That didn’t stop me from strutting down the runway with the @belgian_prop_crew, fawning over @warwickadavis, kickin’ it with @krystinaarielle and trying to keep @thegiancarloesposito and @carlweathers from stealing all the shots. We even celebrated @therealkateesackhoff’s bday with a cake of…well, her.
The best part was having @breewelchandhenry with me the whole weekend!
Let’s do it again in Japan, shall we?

I used to joke that Carl stole my line when I was given a poster to sign and I’d see that he’d already written in his huge writing: “This is the Way.” I’d grumble to him about it and I loved seeing that sly grin.
But on #thisisthewaywednesday, all I can think is that he embodied that line in so many ways. He walked The Way by being a constant student, always wanting to learn more about the craft and about the heart and soul of his fellow artists. He walked The Way by trusting his instincts and pitching outside-the-box ideas for characters- I loved hearing stories about this in Q&A panels at conventions. And he walked The Way in his desire to represent humanity as faithfully as possible when he was directing and acting. His physical presence could be intimidating for sure, but the longer I knew him the more I loved how that huge frame made his moments of childlike glee all the more exhilarating. He loved the craft of PLAY.
Thank you to everyone who has been posting tributes, photos and stories. Please comment below with something you’ll remember about Carl. 👇👇 and go to my YouTube channel to hear one of my stories about him: https://youtu.be/N5embVbVVMQ?si=JW-DKqjeZgl4eyNd

It felt like a fedora kind of day for #thisisthewaywednesday this week. (Thanks, @penmanhats)
My in-laws were visiting this week and we went to see a movie that, if it weren’t based on a true story, would feel like a Hallmark movie. And before you blow up my comments, I’m not slamming Hallmark movies! I tried to find one when I was in Winnipeg! (https://youtu.be/okkI2_fP1Jg?si=TmRrNtVQ5ccFK7es)
But when the credits roll on a Hallmark movie, we are aware that we have to shift back to “real life.”
We went to see The Boys in the Boat, based on the book of the same name, based on the true story of the 1936 University of Washington JV Crew Team and their quest to compete in the Olympics, which were in Berlin that year. They had NO REASON to think they could aspire to that goal. Several of the guys on the team only joined because they needed help paying tuition while the US was coming out of The Depression. Crew was not a popular sport on the west coast, and was most accessible to upper class athletes on the east coast. But this team of men poured out their sweat and focus and gave up a need to have perfect control in order to work together as a team – no small feat, because rowing involves breathing and moving in perfect rhythm with your fellow rowers—row too fast and you lose control, row too slowly and…well, you lose. They adapted to different bodies of water, they rode the wave of nerves when they were performing for crowds of thousands—and when Daniel James Brown asked Joe Rantz if he could write a book about him, Rantz said “No, you can write a book about the boat.”

This is a major #throwback post because it was MONTHS ago that I commissioned @archangelironworks to craft a hammer and screwdriver set for my very handy hubs @chadkimball76.
Levi is a gifted craftsman and artist who I met while he was apprenticing with @tony_swatton. When he mentioned the idea of collaborating on a special item, I knew I wanted him to make something unique for Chad, who is constantly building and tinkering around our house. HOLY SMOKES did I get what I asked for. Levi used ironwood for the wood handles (the hammer was a 5th anniversary gift for Chad), titanium for the hammer head and Damascus steel for the screwdrivers. And as you can see, they make me so happy I just have to dance…
Check out Levi’s work at @archangelironworks and watch his process on his YouTube channel!

Happy Birthday to my big brother @swallzz.
Even when he subjected me to tickle torture, I just wanted his approval. He was and is the coolest guy around, and I’m constantly learning from him.
(However, because of the trauma inflicted by that tickling, I have a hair trigger reaction and will lash out violently at anyone who tries to tickle me now…just ask my husband.)

Would you give your kidney to a stranger?
Melvin-John Woods is doing just that. If that’s not an example worthy of #thisisthewaywednesday, I don’t know what is.
A member of the @official501st , Melvin saw a Facebook post from Josh Beale, a 501st member he’s never met. The post said “Help me save my hero.” Josh’s son Drew, who had first been diagnosed with major kidney problems in 2019, was in need of a new kidney. His post was seen by thousands of members of the Star Wars cosplay community, and Melvin realized he fit the requirements to get tested to see if he was a match. As a fellow dad, Melvin knew he would want someone to do the same for his kids. After extensive testing, Melvin was approved and, after a few delays, the surgery is scheduled for March 4.
If you are a 501st member in the Columbus area and you want to volunteer for the duty to escort Melvin and Drew to surgery on March 4, contact @kojak79fs for information.
May we all be as willing as Melvin to see others as members of our community and walk The Way to help.

I don’t know why it took me this many years to discover the absolute joy and creativity and community that are there for the taking with #dungeonsanddragons, but man oh man am I on board now.
After several slow burn sessions of an ongoing #homegame with the delightful @sweeetanj , @luis.carazo , @christianleenavarro and @aimeecarrero, @tstashwick invited me to a single session game at his #nerdlair, set in a fantastically imaginative world sprung from his noggin. I was a little nervous when I found I’d be playing with badasses like as @lukegygax, @sweeetanj, @itswilwheaton , @christoffvisscher and @janina, but I knew that, at the heart of this community, all that is asked of a player is preparation, imagination, and saying “yes.”
HOLY SMOKES. What an incredible night! I showed up with Vorser Barbedfinger, a dwarf ranger who hails from the mountains but is an expert in swamps because he has a beef with too many folks back home to care about details from that terrain. He’s not much for charisma, but that didn’t matter in the final battle when he leapt onto a galloping horse and saved the day.
Why start D&D now? Anjali is to blame – she helped me see that it’s a fantastic playground for actors and writers; we get to create and develop characters and try them out in real time. I have always loved what I get to explore and learn about when I put on a character from a script, and the same applies to this world. Vorser’s blunt manner and his love of his tangled but carefully braided beard gave me a chance to let go of worry for an evening and try on a new attitude.
I am even more excited to take some of these discoveries into my home game—I found that the quick pace of Todd’s game forced me to deliberate less and create even more.
