This past March at @SXSW, @brenebrown and I had the opportunity to come together on the @VoxMedia stage for a live recording of an episode of her podcast, “Unlocking Us.” We discussed how we manage the delicate balance of navigating the realm of social media and emerging technologies while remaining connected to our humanity. In a world consumed by constant scrolling and the use of digital technology as a shield, how do we cultivate real-life connections where we not only see and value others but also feel seen and valued ourselves? Our full conversation is available on Brené’s podcast and now on “Where Should We Begin?” through the link in my bio. Photo Credit: Rick Kern/Getty Images for Vox Media Deepening human connections has been my ultimate goal from the start. Through my books, courses, podcast, card game, and now a live tour around the country, I always aim to help us understand just how universal our issues and experiences can be. Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting with @thecut, where we ventured beyond just my upcoming shows into lighter topics like a few of my favorite things, why I avoid gossip, and what not to do at a dinner party, highlighting the simplicity that connects us amidst life’s complexities. In a recent podcast episode titled “If He’s a High Value Man, What Am I?” I engage in a discussion with a woman to unpack the question, “why do I keep dating men who tear me down?”. She finds herself in a romantic relationship, tolerating behaviors she vowed she never would. Tune in to the full episode as I guide her through reflecting on her childhood and her parents’ relationships, exploring the correlation they have with her current relationship. Through this process, she learns the empowering truth that she doesn’t have to repeat the past in order to change it. When was the last time you had a really good date? In a new Esther Calling episode of Where Should We Begin? titled “My Husband, His Other Wife, and Me”, a woman shares her journey of love and sacrifice. Meeting abroad, marrying in the States, only to face the heart-wrenching reality of her husband’s familial obligations back home — to marry his brother’s widow. Listen through the link in my bio as I help her untangle the complex web of duty, love, and self-worth, realizing that sometimes the hardest journey is the one back to oneself. Imagination is the most important tool I use in my work. The free sense of play that transforms the woods into a fairy kingdom or a pirate’s den is the same quality that alchemizes the mundane into the extraordinary in adult life. Play is a container for permission to explore and imagination is the source energy that fuels it. That is the energy that has fueled what my team and I have been calling our “theater project,” for the last year. In the early stages of planning, a dear friend and theater director asked us: “Why a theater tour?” “It’s because Esther is a ‘theater kid,’” one of my colleagues said. I had never heard this phrase, but I understood it. I grew up recreating my mother’s romance novels in the parking lot behind our house. I studied psychodrama. I was a puppeteer. Come to think of it, it’s clear why I was drawn to a narrative approach in my clinical work. So, as I embark on my U.S. tour this week, I’m excited to bring that same sense of imagination and play to our time together on stage, at the theater. Read this month’s newsletter through the link in my bio where I delve deeper to answer “Why a theater tour?” And for even more on this topic, I share a lot of behind-the-scenes stories about my theater background in a new episode of my Apple Podcast subscription, “Couple Therapy is the Best Theater in Town.” Imagination is the most important tool I use in my work. What makes this tour so special is that we’re all in this together. Surrounded by many others who share our curiosity about the intricacies of modern love, we will engage in meaningful dialogues about relationships. Join me on my upcoming tour, starting April 4th, where together, we’ll rethink how we connect, desire, and love. So, step into my theater and see what unfolds. I’ve been on stage in a version my whole life. As a child, I created entire universes for play. In front of my mother’s bedroom mirror—and using a big chest of costumes—I played Hit Parade and Eurovision. I was the presenter, all of the singers, the judges, and the audience. And boy, did I clap for myself. On my brother’s guitar, I played the same three chords over and over, inventing songs for hours on end. In the real world, I spent a lot of time alone. But in my play world, I was never lonely. How could I be? My reflection in the mirror wasn’t me. It was the many characters who comprised my ever-evolving personal theater. The way we play can become our life’s work and this truth has been a guiding force throughout my career. Now, as I step onto the stage, I carry with me that same spirit of creativity and transformation. It has been an unexpected evolution, from the therapy couch to the podcast to the stage. Whether I’m showing up as a therapist, a podcast host, or a speaker, I help people break out of their loops, to enter with one story but leave with another. Join me on my upcoming tour, starting April 4th, where together, we’ll rethink how we connect, how we desire, and even how we love through the power of play and storytelling. Link in my bio.
