Last night was truly a pinch-me moment. Having @eliseloehnen in my home, engaging in conversations about our upbringing in the mountains, Montana trails, recommended books (after last night I need to add a new bookshelf – so many amazing recs), and sharing our collective experiences from her book, On Our Best Behavior, was an unforgettable evening. And no, we did not bring our “best behavior”– instead, we authentically embodied our best selves. It was a gathering of support, empathy, and shared experiences, where we served as sounding boards, mirrors, and open arms for one another.
Elise’s book, On Our Best Behavior, is undoubtedly a must-read. It delves deep into the societal conditioning that often hinders women’s self-expression, revealing how cultural norms perpetuate cycles of self-sacrifice and repression. What’s truly remarkable is how Elise’s storytelling humanizes these struggles, making them relatable and deeply impactful. I am immensely grateful for trailblazers like Elise, whose bravery in openly sharing personal stories sparks vital conversations and fosters empowerment.
Our evening together was a testament to the power of genuine connection and mutual support. It’s moments like these that remind us of the importance of showing up for each other, embracing vulnerability, and championing one another’s growth. If you haven’t already grabbed her book I ask that you grab as many copies as you can. Gift to friends, lovers, or treat yourself. And bring a highlighter and sticky notes! So much to unwind and unpack. Thank you Elise. And thank you @laurensmithford and @texasbookfest for bringing us all together.

who’s your best-est buddy? 💗🐶🐐🐇🐮
a celebration of #earthmonth wouldn’t be complete without mentioning our planetary cohabitants. according to a recent survey by the american psychiatric association, 86% of pet owners believe their “fur babies” boost their mental health – and 90% consider their animal adoptees & friends as part of the family. more pet-related benefits:
▶️improved cardiovascular health
▶️elevated mood
▶️boost physical activity levels
▶️reduce anxiety
▶️help alleviate combat symptoms of adhd, ptsd, loneliness & isolation
▶️comfort & companionship (think: the elderly & people with medical conditions)
▶️aid in children’s learning development
animals may also help kids and adults with socializing. 🐕🦺so, take a walk to the dog park, visit a farm or rescue sanctuary, build a bird feeder – engage with any animals that inspire you – and enjoy a moment of zen with another gentle & curious being.
tell us your best buddy’s breed or species tag their profile (if they have one!) in the comments.
can you hear that? it’s the *healing* call of the wild. 👂🏞️❤️🩹
david strayer, a cognitive psychologist & researcher at the university of utah, says that spending time in nature can restore the human brain. he cites the “three-day effect” as a calming influence that reduces stress, improves cognition fosters creativity.
scientifically, exposure to nature decreases stress hormones, elevates mood, and enhances cognitive function. parks and forests offer mental health benefits, including reduced anxiety & improved attention. added bonus: even virtual nature scenes, like this reel, can promote relaxation – so go ahead and watch a few times!
these findings underscore nature’s profound impact on well-being. so next time you’re feeling sad, overwhelmed, or burnt out, schedule some time in the great outdoors. whether it’s a camping trip, a long weekend in a mountain cabin, or a beach vacation, the experience can do measurable good for your mind, heart, body, and soul.
