Studio Ghibli: Sakuma Drops (From Grave of the Fireflies) スタジオジブリ: サクマドロップス(火垂るの墓より) FOOD ART MONTHLY CHALLENGE: Candy/Chocolate from Your Country (Rules Below) I’ve been wanting to paint realistic food from a variety of movies by the Japanese animation studio “Studio Ghibli.” These are the Sakuma Drops candy from the film “Grave of the Fireflies,” which follows two orphans in Japan after WWII. It is absolutely the saddest movie I’ve ever watched, but it’s such an important film that I think everyone should watch it at least once. The interaction between the characters and these candies always stuck in my head, and when I rewatched it, I realized that these candies play a very symbolic role across the whole film. I first watched the movie in high school, but I watched it again last night before posting it… and needed so many tissues. Originally made in 1908, Sakuma drops are only sold in bags now, but they used to be sold in cans. Ghibli released the can design from the film, and I managed to buy it in an online auction for this artwork. Hopefully I can create more Ghibli-themed artwork this year! Sakura Pudding 🌸🍮桜プリン🍮🌸 Sakura desserts are some of my very favorite to paint! This year, I visited “Sunny Days Pudding Cafe ( @sunnydays_pudding ) in Ikebukuro, Tokyo after seeing their cute seasonal sakura pudding on an Instagram Reel. While Japanese pudding is generally similar to flan, this pudding was based off a different style of pudding called “milk pudding.” Instead of egg to thicken as a thickening agent, simple gelatin and milk are combined, allowing for a silky texture with a mild milk flavor that makes an easy base for other flavors… in this case, cherry blossom! Of course I ordered the pudding alongside a sakura float for a perfect spring afternoon dessert!

Sakura Mochi Donuts 🍩🌸桜もちょっとドーナツ 🌸🍩 It’s sakura season! This year, Mr. Donut released a series of sakura mochi donuts with such a cute concept. I would usually only choose to paint two or three donuts at once, but for this series I couldn’t resist! All of them used sakura-flavored mochi dough, but the toppings/fillings are different. From left to right… ① Buds: Glazed and sprinkled with kinako soy bean ② Half-Bloomed: Filled with Sakura-beanpaste flavored whipped cream and dipped in strawberry chocolate ③ Full-Blossom: Sakura-leaf-bean-paste coating and topped with sakura chocolate flakes ④ Dancing (Falling Petal) Sakura: Filled with red beanpaste, dipped in white chocolate, sprinkled with sakura chocolate flakes, and drizzled with milk chocolate Which one would you try?
