🎄 🥂 Merry Christmas from my house to yours.
I hope you are spending the day with loved ones and eating more than your weight in chocolates. If your not, a toast to you and sending love 💗
❄️ Is #snow on the way?
Yes
Where?
📉Firstly it turns much colder this weekend as our air source is the Arctic 🥶
🌨️Then it’ll be cold enough for snow showers for Scotland & NE England
But
❄️ The middle of next week there is a risk of disruptive snow in the south if mild air with rain hits the cold air, it’ll quickly turn to snow-watch this space 🛷
Would you take on the challenge?
Did you know the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world green house gas emissions (that’s 4x all the flying!)
So for 2024 at GMB, Laura Tobin is going to do nothing new for a whole year!
Buying less will help to ‘save the planet’ but also save us money 💰
We will document the journey and see how hard or easy it is and share tips tips she learns along the way.

Record breaking river levels!
Not great news along parts of the River Thames between Oxford & Reading. Many gauges recording record high river levels.
This is Marlow, where the river Thames has burst its banks (the boat is the ‘edge’ and the gauge at the lock was 6cm below its record level.
Many gardens are flooded and I saw some homes flooded. I spoke to people who live in Marlow saying they’ve never seen anything like it.
The good news is the outlooks is dry for most of the week. However-Catchments upstream are yet to peak, so levels here are likely to rise until Monday as rainfall from earlier this week flows down-which isn’t great news-thinking of all those who have been flooded and are at risk of flooding.
🎤 Behind the scenes from Britain Get Singing

🌍 🌡️ 2023 was the hottest year on record
Beating the previous warmest by 0.17°C in 2016, that might not sound like much but it’s the equivalent as Usain Bolt breaking 100m record by severa 10’s of a second rather then a few 100’s.
“2023 has been called an exceptional year with climate records tumbling like dominoes.”
2023 was 1.48°C warmer than the pre-industrial level, very close to the 1.5°C limit, this doesn’t mean we have surpassed the limit set by the paris agreement but it sets a dire precedence.
2023 marks the first time on record that every day within a year exceeded 1°C above the pre-industrial level. Close to 50% of days were more than 1.5°C warmer than the that level.
WHY?
Carbon dioxide and Methane continued to rise, both their highest ever recorded from the emission we put into the atmosphere
And
Unprecedented high ocean temperatures were a driver for the record warm year, and some will say that’s due to El Nino but the report says that while it was a contributing factor the main long-term factor is the continuing increase in concentrations of greenhouse gases
The impacts-A large number of extreme events were recorded across the globe, including heatwaves, floods, droughts and wildfires. Canada wild fires turned NYC skyline orange and Lybia floods caused 4,000 people died and were made 50x more likely due to climate change
We add another line on the climate stripes, red is warm and this is the reddest stripe to date-for the hottest year ever recorded and likely the hottest in at least the last 100,000 years!
2024 likely to be even warmer, which is why it’s so important to reduce our emissions to limit warming. The decision we make now will mean the difference between this being rare in the future for my daughter and her generation or being the norm when she is my age.
What does the future hold?
A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture
For every 1c of warming the atmosphere holds 7% more moisture. Globally Earth has warmed by 1.2C and currently projections around 3C, meaning we’ll see more frequent and more severe flooding unless we reduce emissions and warming.
Warmer and wetter winter, in the last 187 years, 6 of the top 10 wettest years have happened in the last 30 years! It’s the trend of more extremes more recently that is most concerning.
Jumping into 2024 after an amazing 2023!
Fun lives, studio specials, red carpets, great guests & even better collegues.

🌡️ 19.6C in Scotland in January!!
Yes that happened yesterday in Kinlochewe making it the warmest UK January day on record.
Why?
Because of the #Foehn effect, which makes one side of a mountain warmer than the other
Is it linked to #climatechange?
One day alone without a study is hard to say but the trend is clear.
7 of the 12 warmest months have happened in the last 20 years. The last cold record was in 1995!
🌍 What is Earth day?
💚How can you make a difference?

❄️ What makes it officially a #WhiteChristmas?
❄️ It used to be that one flake of snow had to fall at London weather centre in tue 24 hours of Christmas Day, then it closed-so no one is there to monitor.
❄️ Now at the @metoffice HQ in Exeter the forecasters on shift will look at weather observations and satellite images and radar to deduce if it snowed on Christmas Day (tough job @craigtsnell)
@gmb
🥶 Wrap up today-it’s cold-But not ‘Lenny Kravitz’🧣🤣
🌍 #EarthDay-Planet vs. Plastics
🚮 plastic fantastic? It has so many great uses but we create too much of it- seven billion tonnes of plastic waste have been generated globally so far.
♻️ And here’s (one of) the big issues-less than 10 per cent of all plastic we’ve ever created has been recycled!
📉There is a call to reduce plastic production by 60-percent by 2040 & full elimination of single use plastics by the end of this decade.
🏔️ Did you know plastic has been found on the highest mountain and deepest ocean 🌊
🐠 If we keep producing plastic at our current rate, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish!
🔥 We need fossil fuels to create plastic and also when we incinerate it (it actually produces more carbon per tonne, than burning coal)
🌡️ Fossil fuels cause our global temperatures to rise.
So no surprise from the European State of the Climate 2023 report released today that found last year was the joint warmest or second warmest year on record depending on the dataset.
It also found that Europe is the fastest warming continent, coupled with experiencing more extreme weather events, from doughts to widespread flooding and severe heat waves with wildfires affecting millions.
If we can reduce plastic production we can help to tackle the climate crisis.

About last night 🤸
I was lucky enough to attend the European premiere of Cirque du Soleil’s Alegria @cirquedusoleil @alegria.cirquedusoleil – In A New Light at the Royal Albert Hall @royalalberthall
What they can do is amazing 🤩
Also bumped into some of my favourite people too 🥰

Prolonged heavy rain has caused near record river levels & flooding
Flood warnings continue to rise, the outlook is thankfully drier
Flood defences have protected many & areas being built to higher levels
5.5 million homes & businesses are at risk of flooding-are you? You can sign up for free alerts when there is a risk of flooding for you
During storm Babet last year, 300,000 message were sent, the @envagency protected 100,000 properties, 2100 were flooded.
🎤 Watch me & team @gmb massively outside our comfort zones singing against some of your favorite TV shows for a great cause #BritainGetSinging
