Today, thousands of Muslims in Barton will begin celebrating Eid al-Fitr. But what is normally a festival of joy and abundance after the solemnity of Ramadan will be sadly tempered by the human suffering and death we have been witnessing in Gaza. I wish you a heartfelt Eid Mubarak! And may you continue to be lifted by your faith and hope.
Your postcode shouldn’t determine whether you can get a job. So we’re working with remote communities to create 3,000 jobs that deliver services communities want. Our First Nations Reference Group met for the second time today to help us design a program that leads to real economic development in remote Australia. We’re making sure young people get a say with Tremane and Rhea joining us today.

Meet the Liddles! They were homeless for three months, now they’re moving into new affordable housing. Over 40 First Nations families will get a roof over their heads, after a $20 million investment from the Aboriginals Benefits Account in the Yilli Rreung Housing Aboriginal Corporation. They’ve invested in 42 homes that will be leased to employed, low-income First Nations families. This boost in housing supply in the Greater Darwin area will help ease overcrowding and make a huge difference to people’s lives. The Albanese Labor Government is making a difference. We’re making an historic 10-year investment in remote housing that will build up to 270 homes each year, so more families can have a roof over their head.
When you meet young mob like this, it’s hard to not get inspired about big ideas. It was a highlight of my week meeting with members of the First Nations Education Youth Advisory Group. They’re young Indigenous people from around the country who are sharing their experiences with Government. Because we can make better progress on closing the gap when we listen.

Proud to stand with my colleagues for Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is a disease that affects 1 in 7 women. Too many women suffer in silence with this painful disease. Our Government invested $58.3 million in last year’s budget to support women with endometriosis and pelvic pain. This included the establishment of 22 specialised clinics which are now all up and running. Because we’re a Government that delivers for all Australians.

Volunteer organisations like the Scouts do important work that brings families in our communities together. A big thank you to James, Helen, John, Marcus and Baby Ethan for welcoming me to the 1st Hurstville Scout Hall. With the support of our Government’s Stronger Community grants, they’ve been able to repair and refurbish their historic scout hall. Now more families can benefit from quality community spaces, supported by our government.

Today was a proud day for Ngurratjuta communities. Because they’ll be in the driver’s seat after Ngurratjuta, the NT Government and the Commonwealth signed a local decision making agreement. I was in Ikuntji/Haasts Bluff today to sign the agreement, and it’s clear that they’re a community that’s strong and proud. The agreement means that locals will be taking on more responsibility, and making sure investments and services deliver on the ground. The Chair of Ngurratjuta, Alison Anderson, said that “this is about taking control of our own narrative. Working together without malice, racism or blame. It’s about economic development and jobs.” We’re helping locals build a better future by investing in 24 real jobs with proper pay and conditions, on-country learning, Wi-Fi and a community safety patrol.

Everyone deserves a job with good pay and conditions. And that’s exactly what we’re delivering.
I wish you all a happy Easter and all the blessings of this special time of year. If you’re working this long weekend – thank you!
We’re backing tradies and making sure more Australians can get trained up in the skills our communities need. Last year 24,000 students took up construction with our Fee-Free TAFE places. It’s great news, because to build more homes, we need to make sure we have the tradies to build them. And that’s what our Government is helping deliver.
