I hope she doesn’t mind me sharing this, but around 18 months ago my mum was diagnosed with an extremely rare and life threatening form of cancer. I know many of you will have met my mum at gigs, usually down the front row singing along making friends, or at the merch stand getting CDs signed for fans she just met. She is the most brilliant, life affirming, energetic, funniest and kind person I know and this energy is infectious with everyone she meets. She is my best friend and constant source of wisdom and support. So for this to happen to her of all people, although I know cancer sadly touches so many of us now, to me just felt beyond unreal, especially after just becoming a mother myself and looking forward to sharing this experience with her and seeing her become a grandma to Monty.
Last year she underwent a gruelling course of chemo and radio therapy which was the hardest thing I have ever had to watch, not knowing what the outcome would be. There were several times when I did not think she’d make it and thought it was goodbye. At the time I was performing 7 shows a week with a newborn baby at home, so couldn’t even be with her to support her as much as I wanted. Watching her courage, strength and resilience throughout this has amazed and inspired me beyond words. Despite all the odds, bit by bit we watched her become stronger, her determination never wavering. A couple of months ago we had the most incredible news that there was no longer evidence of the disease. I believe so much of this was down to her strength, attitude and courage. Mum, you never stop amazing me. Thank you for fighting so hard.
