This birthday surprised me because each and every day he brings pure joy and lightness and love to our family. Each day, while challenging, is also made fun and full of laughter and discovery because he invites us all to it with his own unique charm. But 2 came and I was a wreck. Why this sudden sadness?!
Because I’ve seen how quickly they grow. I’m witnessing it happening in real time and I have to remind myself to savor it. Because this is not happening again.
His toddle has become a run. His once searching eyes are now telling me original ideas. His delicate cuddle is now a tight squeeze around my neck. His babbles are now jokes.
But every night when I’m about to put him down in his crib and he lays his head on my shoulder, I can detect my little newborn baby by his little breath on my cheek. That breath is the simplest yet most important thing in the world. And while I know everything changes, that little breath reminds me the most important parts stay the same.
