In Paris, as an apprentice to Bresson….. What a profound and beautiful personality even at that age…! Kumar told me years ago how Bresson wanted to speak to him over the phone before granting him a first meeting ‘only if he liked my voice over the phone would he consider meeting me….you know Breason did that…he would decide if he liked someone by first listening to their voice over the phone…’
Hello friend!…thanks for the throwback pic

MAHESH ELKUNCHWAR …I was thrilled to receive a message from this great playwright whose plays were part of our syllabus at #NSD that he was coming to my performance of #LAL DED…and “would you like to have lunch” ? In the studios …working on the sound design for ‘Mani Kaul and That Thing Called The Actor’ intermittently for 18 months…. Paddy was so happy to be back in an analogous studio….
So deeply moved and honoured by the iconic Sai Paranjpe’s desire to cast me in her play ‘Jaswanti’ in Marathi, some years ago ( and later in a Hindi feature film…it was in the year 2008) (I needed a month to master the language but we didn’t have that kind of time…how I regret my not having mastered Marathi from the minute I landed in Mumba in 1987i…I missed out on some incredible work with the most fabulous directors—Sai Paranjpye and later a Marathi film for Sumitra Bhave) Later Sai cast me in the lead for a wonderful Hindi film which however the big or maybe no longer so big Hindi film producer endlessly delayed only to never let it happen eventually. Dear Beloved Sai Paranjpe ji….my profound respect and love for you and to you…just being mentioned by you is an affirmation for me, of the highest value…. Thank you dear Abhay, for sharing this with me! #abhaykulkarni #marathitheatre #indiantheatre #saiparanjpye
THEATRE…this fifth Veda… In January this Year Pandit Uday Bhawalkar’s ‘Swarkul’ (Pune) was inaugurated. A haven and a heaven on this earth. Beautifully designed architecturally, and resonating with Uday Ji’s devotion to Dhrupad, the inaugural saw the presence of the greatest musicians of today . (In pic here with Pandit Uday Bhawalkar, is his Guru brother Ustad Mohi Bahauddin Dagar, the wonderful Dhrupad maestro of the Rudra Veena) As theatre practitioners, the ‘Vaachik’ and the world of swar— (the second pillar of the actors’ training in the Natyashastra)— is for all actors to master, or atleast to have a deep knowledge of…. Dhrupad training actually allows the actor to understand the concept of timing in speech too….
Dear dear Paddy….no no no….we were to have a beer or the Magic Moment gin soon…you cannot just leave, just like that….. A.M Padmanabhan….the last of the geniuses… Sound recordist and sound designer….his knowledge and experience beyond belief!! Paddy I thought somehow that you were indestructible…and what they heck….we were to get back to the studios for my next film… Smile down at me from up there, shower me with your blessings ….your sense of humour and your brilliance…. Tell me you haven’t gone ..
Thanks Anup ji! Saving this for myself here…to keep reminding myself, all the time… All the time…

Paddy….eighteen months ago….working on my film ‘Mani Kaul and That Thing Called The Actor’ Paddy was so happy to be back in the studio…scolded me afterwards saying ‘ I am so happy that it makes me very angry with you….’ Pause… I, bemused, looked at him ‘it will be very hard for me to sit at home after this..’ ‘We’ll begin work.on a new project right away Paddy’ , I said..’.I don’t have the funds or anything in place but let’s start with making the sound scape for the script first..’ He chuckled then chortled and began to recount another one of his fascinating experiences with recording sound, on location or otherwise…these marvellous tellings invariably began with…’Once we were shooting in….’
