I wouldn’t normally post a #selftape audition to instagram – they’re generally not that interesting out of context of the full story, and of course as #actors we try to keep the confidence of the production in question. This one from earlier in the year however, I thought was worth a share. I had previously filmed several takes of this scene where the character comes home drunk then carries on drinking, so already I had it in the can. I then decided to play with what would happen if I popped a real bottle. I mis-timed the bottle opening with my line reader app so the take was already ruined, but as I only had the one bottle, I carried on. Due to the SAG/AFTRA strikes this year, I missed the chance to celebrate returning to a wonderful job I originally worked on in 2019 – #titans. It was such a privilege to step back into Mercy Graves’ shoes for one last time as the show wrapped with season 4, now available on Netflix. I only flew for the first time aged 21, so I’ve never lost my sense of wonder and gratitude at visiting other cities, cultures and climates. Sometimes along the way though, I wished I had someone to share the experiences with. So when I was approached by @flashpack to be one of their ambassadors, I of course jumped at the chance. @Flashpack is a travel company designed for solo travellers in their 30s and 40s, and offers destinations across the globe, whilst introducing you to exciting itineraries and like-minded communities. I chose to go to the Philippines this December to chase the sun in winter, for the chance to slow down from a busy lifestyle, and to get a taste of (private) island paradise. Loved.❤️ One of my very best friends of over 20 years standing since meeting on the set of ‘Ideal’ starring Johnny Vegas, Rebecca called me a few weeks ago. ‘When can we talk about your 40th?’ I was in denial. ‘Urrrrgh, I dunno – I’m just feeling really overwhelmed.’ Rebecca has been has always been an angel in my life – a shining example of love, with a side eye and sense of comedy that has often has me struggling to breathe with laughter. She gave me the gift of not only a trip to Barcelona, but the gift of space, time, new perspective, and of course her company in a period of our lives where there are so many demands upon us. Often in life, especially as a creative, the journey is anything but straightforward. After so many years pursuing one thing, it’s easy for the mind to trick you into believing that you haven’t achieved as much as you should have, that you don’t have enough to show for your efforts, and that maybe another, different path would be more attractive. But what if we are in exactly the right place? A wise, soulful new friend said to me yesterday ‘you’ll have to let go of who you have been in order to become who you are meant to be.’ Like a signpost on my long and winding path it was a message to rest, refocus, regroup and ease on down the road. I’m glad I don’t know the destination – not only does it make life more exciting, it allows me to envision the very best possible place to arrive at. Lots of people I know, myself included, have been feeling the effects of a very dense time recently. The chaos of world events has a way of reflecting in both our individual circumstances and internal worlds. When I’m at my most challenged, my horizons may lower, and I cannot always plan beyond the next week – sometimes even the next day. What I can do, and the one thing I always have control over, is the lens through which I interpret those challenges. If I am able to practice gratitude for my day and all the richness within it, then my perspective always changes for the better. It can be as simple as vocalising one’s thanks for a phone call, a hot meal, a roof over one’s head, or the beauty of nature – even if just to oneself. We cannot always know when things will change for the better, but if you can allow knowing THAT THEY WILL comfort you, then the seemingly ordinary beauty within the challenges is sometimes revealed. The greater beauty being that you are present for your life, through all of it. What are you grateful for at the moment? I’ve been so grateful to spend extra time with friends celebrating the start of a new decade this month – it has reset my nervous system and allowed me to bathe in gratitude for all the love I am surrounded by. The end of my 30s was a strange period, full of the challenges that many have faced through covid and now a recession. My energy was depleted and I felt a lot of the time like I was flailing, often stuck in an ‘if only’ mindset. Surviving those challenges with lots of support and invitations to view endings as new beginnings, has brought a new resolve to my spirit. Sharing stories with others has reminded me that there is no easier path, and no greener grass. The mountains we climb have different vistas, different gradients, but the solutions are the same. One foot in front of the other. Reach up and take the support offered when needed. Reach down and lift others up when you are strong enough. Keep going. Remember that all the highs, and dips, and rocky points are just chapters in your story, and they pass. You will inevitably reach your destination, so can you love who you are becoming along the way? #instapoet #inspirationalpoetry #lifebeginsat40
I’m entering the final few months of my thirties, and these last three years have been transformative. Not much has landed how I thought it would this decade, but there has been so much magic. What a blessing to be presented with the challenges that require you to learn how to get out of your own way. What a gift to have people in your life to walk the road less travelled with you. What a privilege to feel healthy, safe and loved.
