Nazanin Boniadi Instagram – In May 2018, Maedeh Hojabri, an Iranian teenager, shared videos of herself dancing on Instagram, where she had hundreds of thousands of followers. Shortly after, security agents arrested her and later forced her into making a televised confession on state TV admitting that dancing is a crime.

In response to her arrest, supporters worldwide posted videos of themselves dancing on social media, using the hashtag #DancingIsNotACrime.

Iranian-British actress Nazanin Boniadi expressed solidarity with Maedeh Hojabri in a video op-ed for The New York Times in July 2018, calling for an end to gender apartheid in Iran.

Six years have passed since Maedeh’s arrest, yet the conditions for women’s rights and freedoms in Iran continue to deteriorate under the Islamic Republic of Iran’s decades-long gender apartheid regime.

✍️ Nazanin Boniadi is a key signatory of the @endgenderapartheid.today campaign, which is working to codify gender apartheid as a crime against humanity under international law.

Note: This video was published in the NYT on July 21, 2018.

Nazanin Boniadi Instagram – I’m horrified to learn that my good friend and prominent Iranian journalist @pouriazeraati was stabbed multiple times outside his London home. While the @metpolice_uk is investigating, I hope they take the credible threats made by the Islamic Republic against current and former @iranintltv journalists (including @fardadfarahzad, @niushasaremi, @shelerhaghanifar and @simaa_sabet) seriously, especially given the regime’s decades-long history of targeted extraterritorial killings.
UK and European lawmakers often ask how they can best help the people of Iran realize their democratic aspirations — which would also result in regional and global peace and stability. How about by ensuring that dissidents are protected and regime cronies don’t get to live freely in our democracies while they terrorize people at home and abroad? How about we stop appeasing and platforming the Islamic Republic authorities and start providing a safe haven to those who risk everything for freedom?
If this was meant to cower dissidents into silence I can assure you it has only stiffened our collective resolve to stand united against a bloodthirsty regime that uses both domestic and transnational repression to maintain power.
Get well soon, Pouria. More power to you and all journalists and activists who expose the crimes of the IR.
