Having grown up in a small town in Ireland, Coughlan struggled to break into Hollywood, toiling throughout her 20s as she tried to make ends meet and find time for auditions. But if Coughlan has waited for the spotlight, it’s now her time to shine. “I am so lucky I get to do [this career],” she says, “because pretty much my whole 20s, I didn’t get to do it.”
In her cover story, @nicolacoughlan speaks to Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief @versharma about her behind-the-scenes relationship with Bridgerton co-star Luke Newton, fundraising for humanitarian efforts in Palestine, the audition that changed her life, and, yes, the discourse surrounding her age (Dearest reader: Coughlan is 37. And she does, in fact, have a theory to explain why this seems to shock some people.) Thankfully for us, she’s as forthcoming as Lady Whistledown about it all.
“I think a lot of Penelope’s story is about her stepping out of the shadows and into the light, and taking up her space,” she says. “I felt like I had to do that as well.”
