Last week, JVP-LA, @sagaftramembersforceasefire, @filmworks4pal, and artists and organizers across LA, took part in a day of action that demonstrated that the people of LA will not sit idly by or be distracted by the entertainment industry while Israel threatens to invade Rafah. In the current, terrifying intensification of the ongoing Nakba, Israel has killed over 32,000 Palestinians, injured tens of thousands more, and displaced and starved millions with funding, weapons, and political cover from the United States. On Oscars Sunday, we let it be known that our eyes are on Rafah. The entertainment industry has helped forge the idea of a “special relationship” between U.S. and Israel since Israel’s founding, using narratives of victimization to justify military force and drawing parallels between the U.S. and Israel as interconnected settler colonial projects. These narratives have created a consensus around U.S. policy toward Israel and strengthened the U.S.-Israel alliance that fuels the current genocide against Palestinians. Here in Los Angeles, a city central to cultural production, we harness the role of artists and culture workers in the fight for liberation whose stories can help us imagine better worlds. These stories have been told and will continue to be told, even as Israel kills Palestinian journalists, artists, and poets and as studios and production companies retaliate against those who speak out against the Israeli genocide against Palestinians and U.S. foreign policy.
