Repost from @mkea.info • Aloha Everyone, MKEA welcomes all of you to this introduction to the second promo clip premiering tomorrow at 12 noon of KŪKULU, A Tribute to the Pillars of Mauna a Wākea album compilation. Tomorrow’s clip features a behind the scenes glimpse into the making of what would become the Kukulu Medley documented by Kolby Moser and her film team and recorded by Shawn Pimental and Sonny Lim in Puʻukapu, Waimea. See you tomorrow at noon. #kukulu #kukiaimauna #aoletmt #tmtshutdown #maunakea #mauna
Mele Manaka, What I absolutely loved today is representing the mauna, seeing mauna merchandise at each craft fair location and most of all seeing kia’i from up on the mauna and hugging and pledging our commitment should the need be there and seeing my hula sisters who I danced with in middle school before any of us joined hālau. Most of them went on to dance for the Lim’s and are the front line OGs and to see them today just filled my heart. The hula bond is like the mauna bond, unshakeable and unbreakable. Earrings @e_ola_ana_hawaii shell pendant @kaahanui_designs wooden pendant, gift on the mauna in 2019, KŪKULU shirt @puacase

In commemoration of April 2, 2015. Nine years ago as I raced up to the mauna with Chief Caleen Audrey Sisk at my side, we began receiving the texts of who was being arrested on the crosswalk and I asked my dancers to make sure every single one arrested was chanted for as they were driven down in the police cars, vans or paddy wagons to honor them and recognize their stance, and their courage. We stopped at the crosswalk and my chanters jumped into the back of the truck and up we went. The vans with those arrested at the summit passed me as we drove up. When we arrived at the top, I saw Hawane and so many others who I hold deep in my heart and what came to me then was just chant, chant to regroup, chant to strengthen, chant to have courage, chant to remember who we come from, chant to stand! And we did! mahalo Ehitu Keeling for this footage, I treasure it….” From @leina_alawho “As Ruth Aloua and I were being transported down the mauna in the police vehicle, we desperately tried reaching aunty Pua Case by cell phone, and FB, stretching our arms as far as they would go, and it proved to be a difficult task with the zipties, but we had no reception. As we descended the mauna, we saw her truck heading up, and we knew right then that everything was as it should be.” From @nopili 2 ‘Apelila 2015, Lā 8: Nine years ago today was the day that the first arrests on Maunakea were made (second encounter with TMT). Some ‘ohana arrested at the crosswalk, county district, for obstruction of the road, some ‘ohana arrested at the gravel road, state jurisdiction, for obstruction of the road, and ‘ohana arrested at the proposed TMT site, state jurisdiction, for criminal trespassing. #31 A day that awakened our lā hui and the world. Nine years later we still kūpa’a ✊🏽 #aloha’āinaaloha #kapualoha
Sending this out on this very special Sunday for millions of people. I’m hoping that an organization with a big world-wide reach will consider making a beautiful and compassionate call out to all who have ever included the name of Jesus or Iesu Cristo in their prayer for help and healing, to bless their food, to worship to come together unified in the most powerful prayer directed to Gaza, his homeland and people and then send that prayer to all other places suffering a similar fate. For all the times throughout the centuries that his name has been uttered and revered, isn’t it the moment for a world-wide universal prayer that no doubt would include millions. I’m sending this thought forward from a little occupied nation, from the land and spirit of Aloha. Perhaps this thought won’t get very far, nevertheless I’ll send it to the top of the mauna where I lift my pule to the kupuna of this ‘Āina but at the same time, know that they are all working together and let’s see where it goes. Mahalo nui. Pua just as an after thought if you’re wondering , this is not a post about religion, this is a spirit filled heart felt intention that has nothing to do with doctrine or denomination of any kind. ❤️ it has to do with people and prayer, liberation and peace.
Everybody at Ho’ike in Hilo while we carry on with hālau practice at home and leaving the space after hula, I almost cannot believe how blessed we are from Waimea to live in this, the magnificence and beauty within this community surrounded by this landscape. This is indeed the week of hula but this is every week in our one Hānau, our homeland. So excited to be a part of merrie monarch this week, witnessing and experiencing what everyone has brought to offer, share and exchange. Hula is the heartbeat, the breath of life Ola!
