Answer: Roy Innis. Innis was born in St. Croix and his family later moved to Harlem, New York. In 1963 he joined CORE’s Harlem Chapter then was elected Chairman of the Chapter’s Education Committee the following year. Innis became a forceful advocate of community-controlled education.
