Uzo Aduba Instagram – Ito Ogbo. A cultural ceremony nearly 500 years old honoring all those in our community who have reached 80 years. It takes place every three years and, upon completion of the ceremony, all of the celebrants are bestowed the title of “Ogbueshi.” Food, music, dance, and fireworks are enjoyed at each respective house throughout the weekend, and most importantly people come to pay their highest respects to the graduating elder.
People from across Nigeria and the world descend on our small town to witness the tradition. Today, the community welcomed its latest age grade “class” which includes as its member, my Godfather and Uncle, Ifeanyi Anyaoku.
To say it is a major feat is to put it mildly.
I have been to Ito Ogbo before, and although timing this year doesn’t allow me to attend, I wanted to send my love back home to my family. So many are there celebrating with him and lifting. Him. UP.
Uncle, you are so deeply loved and we are all so happy you have reached this milestone. We Thank God you are seeing this day come to pass. And doing it in STYLE. With true love surrounding you. I hope you are able to absorb all of it.
This first picture is of my dear Godfather and I together at a wedding a few years ago:). The second is him today at the Ito Ogbo ceremony. So much life happening behind those glasses there. So curious what he might be taking in, thinking…
