Nathan Fillion Instagram - Has it already been 20 years? I’ve talked a lot about Firefly in my time, answered a lot of questions about it, and yet, still, I don’t have the right words to honor it. As a learning experience, nothing has taught me as much about my craft and the industry. As for my career, nothing has given me as solid a foundation. And as for love, I never knew how much love a little tv project could bring to my life. To the cast- thank you. You have no idea how much you mean to me. To Joss- in 20 years I’ve still not found a way to express what you’ve done for me. To the fans- without you, space is vast, cold, and empty. With you, space becomes a home for all of us, and there’s no place I’d rather be. To those of you who have never seen Firefly, we’ll see you soon enough. Happy Anniversary, all.

Nathan Fillion Instagram - I was 17 years old when I saw the first trailer for #FreeGuy, and now that it’s finally here, I can say it was worth the wait. With all of @vancityreynolds ‘ action hero roles, one could be forgiven for forgetting the very smart and subtle character work that he’s capable of. Guy has fresh eyes. The amount of calculation, evaluation, and understanding that goes into how a character “discovers” what we all take for granted cannot be understated. I experienced real joy watching this film, and you don’t have to be a video game nerd to appreciate it. Yes, the spectacle of special effects is tremendous, but see it for the work, the expressions on Guy’s face, the brilliant confusion he endures in comprehending the world in which he lives, and the loving heart that beats within him. Also, he falls down a lot, and I love that stuff.

Nathan Fillion Instagram - This is my mom, God rest her soul (not dead). She’s an excellent cook, a fantastic public speaker, and though she says she doesn’t like animals they are still drawn to her like bees to honey. She goes by many names, I assume to help avoid the authorities, but most people know her as Cookie (short for Cookie Birthday Cake). She was my first experience with celebrity, because people still constantly stop her to say how she changed their lives as their teacher. She’s been my teacher, too. The lessons she’s taught me have carried me on to many, many successes. If anyone ever accuses me of being an excellent human, I can invariably trace it back to how she has taught me to behave. Mom, have the happiest of birthdays today, and know- I AM being haive!

She put too much tomato paste in her lasagna but made up for it with her mashed potatoes. Her secret weapon to stop young brothers from scrapping was a soothing back scratch. She was a pool shark, a whiz at cards, and a gunshot survivor. She lived in Canada since the 50’s, but never lost her east coast accent. She would use the word “crap” but considered “Joe Banana” to be profanity. She was always ready to laugh and make you a snack. See you soon enough, Grandma With Dead Budgie. We love you.
