Caption : In memory of Kishin Shinoyama sensei: Mr. Kishin Shinoyama was a photographer who crafted the image of Japan, dashing through the country’s cultural genesis that occurred during its high growth period through the era of the so-called bubble economy. I have had the privilege of being photographed by him several times, and he kindly contributed his work in an exhibition I have curated. We shall see how much of Mr. Shinoyama’s vast accomplishments will be historicized in the world of Japanese art. Sensei, please enjoy observing the development from where you are in the world beyond! He was a tremendous commercial photographer who cut through the ages in Japan. I put my hands together in prayer. 🙏Likes : 43389

Caption : Takashi Murakami’s newest masterwork, which also makes its premiere at #MurakamiMonsterized, is titled “Judgement Day” — an 82 feet long painting that used 10,000 different silk screens and was produced in a matter of several weeks! 😱 The main figure in the center is Enma, the King of Hell in Buddhism. But you’ll also find zombie-like kabuki actors dressed as samurai and geisha, and two groups of yokai (Japanese supernatural beings). Akin to music sampling, Murakami was inspired by different artistic styles to create a visual feast of images. You may notice references to 19th century Japanese woodblock prints, including works by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, and Murakami’s use of trompe-l’œil or western optical illusion techniques. 👹 Visit “Murakami: Monsterized” to get a closer look at all of the details of Murakami’s latest paintings. Caption : Yesterday evening, a major earthquake hit the Noto Peninsula (Ishikawa Prefecture) area. I pray that normal life will be restored as quickly as possible for those affected by the Noto earthquake. 🙏 Japan constantly experiences earthquakes, really all the time. Foreigners often say that Japanese people are meticulous and value cleanliness, and I think it actually has something to do with Japan’s wild natural phenomena. I believe that this is an appropriate way of life that results from a sense of impermanence—a sense that our lives are as fleeting as the leaves on a tree and that we must live humbly—faced with the utter fickleness of nature in Japan, which both gives us beautiful and wonderful gifts and takes the lives of tens of thousands of people. Our country is located on the oceanic plate subduction zone so it’s unavoidable, but the country is periodically hit by natural catastrophes such as great earthquakes and typhoons and, therefore, the nature has always been equated with fierce gods. This is why monotheism has not taken root in Japan. The reason the raging gods of nature are not demonized in Japan is because when there are no such disasters occurring, they really bring abundant blessings. The Kanto region, where Tokyo is located, is supposedly due for a major earthquake according to the cycle. In addition, famous Mt. Fuji is also approaching the point in the cycle where it will erupt. After the previous Great Kanto Earthquake, Japan plunged into a world war. The devastation of people’s hearts and minds resulting from the natural disaster may have had something to do with the development. Whatever the case may be, I wish for the safety of everyone in the Noto region. The music here is Anpanman’s March, which I understand was often played after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 to encourage children in the affected areas.Likes : 26118

Caption : Mr. Marc Jacobs is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his brand! 👏👏👏👏 Congratulations and happy anniversary! A special visual to commemorate the occasion has been created. Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of it. The whole reason I am still able to work on the edge of street fashion is because Marc invited me to be a part of the Louis Vuitton project. Even now, when I am interviewed at museums or so, the interviewer tells me that I have built a bridge between art and fashion, to which I correct him/her every time by saying, “No. That project was Mr. Marc Jacobs’ achievement, and I was just following his direction.” Anyway, I still feel honored to have been allowed to participate in such a page of history even if I am mistaken and I still wonder what God wanted to speak to people although my encounter with Marc might be a twist of fate. Whatever it was, it was because of you, Marc, and I can only thank you for it. Marc, please continue to fascinate the world with your unchanging passion and creativity.Likes : 19644

Caption : Only 25 more days left of my solo exhibition “Takashi Murakami: Unfamiliar People – Swelling of Monsterized Human Ego” at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. @asianartmuseum On February 8, they will be holding the third and final campaign to gift the highly popular Collectible Trading Card with the admissions ticket. (Completed sets of these are being traded at high prices on the Japanese resale site Mercari.) The painting shown in this post is titled “Judgement Day”. In my conversations with the curator Laura Allen, she asked me to create a large iconic work suitable for the exhibition’s theme, monsters. I am quite proud of this resulting work, which I created by mixing the monstrosity of human beings I felt through the pandemic with the strange imageries of Ukiyoe from the Edo period (1603 – 1868). Ukiyoe was a theme that I had always avoided in the past, so I am very grateful that Laura’s guidance allowed me to create a work addressing it for the first time. Please come and see my new endeavor in the few remaining days of the exhibition. “Judgement Day” The SFAAM “Murakami: Monsterized” exhibition is until February 12th. #AsianArtMuseum #MuseumDifferently #TakashiMurakamiLikes : 19585

We now only have 3 to 4 days for the physical painting process. I wonder how close we can bring it to the desired level. By the way, three days with our backs agains the wall should be equivalent to about a month and a half in terms of energy. I desperately hope to get it to the zone where a message that can reach the audience erupts from the work I think we did a pretty good job with the design. Thank you, design team. Dear everyone in the painting team: We have little time left! I am counting on you. Likes : 12520

Caption : The “Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto” exhibition opened on February 2. JP THE WAVY produced and sang the theme song, “Mononoke Kyoto”, for the exhibition. The reason why I asked JP THE WAVY to write the song for me was because I happened to see a group of children around second to fourth grades dancing energetically to his song “Pick N Choose” at their hip-hop dance recital. I became extremely excited, sensing that this was the long-awaited dawn of Japanese hip-hop. To draw an analogy, it seemed comparable to the dawn of Japanese rock music marked by the appearance of the band, Happy End! Whoaaaaa! I couldn’t sit still, so I reached out by DM-ing WAVY’s Instagram, and he responded immediately; by midnight that day, astonishingly, he was at my studio. That was toward the end of November 2023. He started making the music at a tremendous speed, we exchanged numerous LINE messages back and forth, and I was able to attend the first recording in early December. From there, things progressed rapidly and, at the end of the year, on December 30, he completed the song. WAVY stayed at my studio for about 8 hours during the lyric writing process and kindly picked up a lot of ideas from me. After that, I created the WAVY character as a creative response from me. And finally, on February 2, at the opening reception that started at 6 pm, WAVY actually performed with the kid dancers, and then again at the dinner party from 8 pm, he also had his own performance. His stage costume was made by PROLETA RE ART at the suggestion of WAVY. You can listen to the theme song “Mononoke Kyoto” written by JP THE WAVY by scanning the QR code at the end of my exhibition. Please have a listen when you visit “Takashi Murakami Mononoke Kyoto”. @sorry_wavy @musiclabo1998 @amkk_project @jardins.des.fleurs @azumamakoto @proletareart @kojima_shoten @takashimurakami_mononoke_kyoto #kyotocitykyoceramuseumofart #kyoto #art #TakashiMurakami #mononokekyoto Photo by @suzukish1nLikes : 11576
