Todrick Hall Instagram - I posted Beyonce’s response to this video yesterday, but here’s the actual video! My second viral video! I had JUST moved to LA from NYC, and I had no friends….so I went and spoke to the dance department at AMDA and made some friends there that would go on to help me create many more videos! I posted on Craigslist that we were planning a flash mob and some cops submitted so they could get the rehearsal info. They showed up and tried to shut our video down. They said flash mobbing was illegal, so we pretended to “cancel” our flash mob and switched to a different location. I have never been more afraid to shoot something in my life. The stakes were so high, but we did it and not only did we not get in trouble, @target then hired me to do several projects including a live music video with @gwenstefani! Moral of the story is, don’t break the law unless it’s for the queen lol Also, several of the ppl in the video have gone on to do incredible things. @jakekodish went on to be a huge choreographer and dance for T-Swift, Big Brother legend @davonnedianne_ and drag race superstar @kornbreadthesnack were also in the step section!
Todrick Hall Instagram - This video is always hard for me to watch. Getting that golden ticket was such a bittersweet moment. I was happy because against the advice of the producers of Idol I sang an original song (which was unheard of at the time) and my creativity got me through! I remember the first time this aired and I heard someone say, I’m your fan for the first time…it was such a weird feeling to go from being an unrecognizable muggle to someone that someone idolized in an instant. But, when I watch my response and my behavior in speaking to them I can just see an uncomfortable young black boy who already came out of the closet, only to feel the pressure to pretend that I hadn’t. The way I was moving and speaking was just so not who I am or even was at the time. I did this audition with my best friend Scott Hoying just a few people behind me, crazy. When I did this audition I was IN LOVE with my first true love, Gareth (the same guy I wrote “Color” about). He wanted to go to the audition with me so badly, but I was terrified that if he went I’d be outted and it would ruin my chances at success. He gave me a white rosary that he wanted me to wear when I auditioned so his energy could be in the room with me. I then had my friend Julia be there with my mom, just so to hopefully deflect from the idea that I could possibly be gay. It’s just so weird to me now. I’m happy that I did Idol, and happy that it went the way that it did. When I got eliminated from that show, I was devastated…not because of the loss, but because I went out being someone I’m not. I vowed to myself in the car on the way home that I would never deny my true self an opportunity. I’d rather go down in flames as my real self, that go up in lights as someone I’m not.

Todrick Hall Instagram - When I got cast in Kinky Boots on Broadway I knew that this stunt casting was done because the Broadway producers knew that I would know my audience and be able to push ticket sales in a very unconventional way. As luck would have it, when I got the news I happened to be preparing to shoot a new season of “Rupaul’s Drag Race!” I asked the producers if they’d send me my costume, shoes and wig (which is unheard of on Broadway) so that I could shoot a lipsync to Billy Porter’s rendition of “Land of Lola!” The producers were naturally very reluctant as they couldn’t be there to supervise the filming and Drag Race was like…girl you get one shot, we have an Emmy Award winning show to film. But, luckily Ru was so kind and he, Michelle, Ross and Carson all came out to watch me. Now, I don’t consider myself a drag queen (even though Bob and Monet make fun of me constantly about my stance on this subject matter) so performing in Drag while Rupaul watched me was the scariest thing I think I’ve ever done in my entire life, but I did it! Rupaul was so sweet and even did a little plug to tell people to get their tickets. To put the icing and cherry on top of an already draggy cake Rupaul showed up to my opening night of “Kinky Boots” and took pictures with the entire cast and my mom! That is a night I will never forget, thank you to World of Wonder and the entire Drag Race family for allowing me to film this moment and using this iconic stage to promote the Broadway show AND to the producers of Kinky Boots for trusting me with the costume and wig. The video now has over 10 Million Views and helped to promote not just the Broadway show but my involvement with “Drag Race” as well! Now that’s marketing babes!
Todrick Hall Instagram - Every time I’m overwhelmed by the industry, and on the verge of giving up, I watch this video on repeat. I remember moving to LA not knowing anyone, and deciding that I should do a flash mob to Beyonce’s “End of Time!” This was my favorite song on the album, and I was so confused as to why there was no video. I now know it was because she got pregnant, but at the time I was like well us fans must do everything we can do to promote this album. I hoped and prayed that she’d see my video, but not only did she see it, she uploaded this video and honestly this endorsement changed my life. I remember my phone going off and I was getting so many notifications that I couldn’t even move them in time to open the phone for a good solid five minutes, which felt like an eternity at the time. Everyone I knew was frantically calling texting DM-ing, etc. saying “Beyonce saw your video!” I’ve never seen her do anything like this for a fan before or since my video was made, and it’s some thing I’ll never forget as long as I live. I LOVE this woman and thank you @tytryone for showing my video to the Queen!

Sir, she wasn’t rude to you, she literally repeated things YOU said and then gave you the opportunity to campaign to your black audience and a black only journalist event. Todrick Hall Instagram - With all this Minaj/Meg beef swirling around the internet, I thought I’d just put a lighthearted video out there lol. I’ve always been a Nicki fan and a Disney fan so I thought, why not combine those two worlds and do some rap covers with a little Disney twist. I used to have a homemade rinky dink green screen studio in the garage of my old house and during the time I made this video I was putting out five videos every week. That was A LOT to keep up with, so my quality was starting to suffer, but on this particular day I was like…you know what, I’m gonna take my time with this. I called my girl Brittney at @royalentertainers and asked her for some costumes,l then I called up my boy @jojoguadz and asked him if he’d be my Mowgli and he was like “yes bitch!,” then I called up my girl @lipsticknick and said will you come beat my face for like 9 different looks and she as like “absolutely!” Now at this time I was dating @jessejamespattison and I was very uncomfortable with the idea of doing drag in front of my boyfriend. He wanted to watch me film this SO BADLY and I was like “You are forbidden from watching!” I wish I had the raw footage from this shoot because, I remember very vividly that he was trying crack the door open in the garage to watch me and I was like “Stop the track!” BAHAHA, I wasn’t having it, but he made me feel so comfortable and reminded me that me doing drag didn’t make me any less of a man, Nicole even put him in drag, we stayed up ALL NIGHT until like 9 am in the next day shooting this video, laughing, kiki-ing, it was one of favorite shoots I’ve ever done. *sighs, those were the good old days, and I’ll never forget that moment with some of my favorite people. 💕 Get your Toddy vinyls TODAY, $10 off! Todrick Hall Instagram - I haven’t been this excited about something in a long time. For the first time in forever, I feel hopeful for our country. Living in London and dating someone Australian really opens your eyes to how crazy it is that we have normalized guns. As someone who hopes to have children someday, I want to live in a country where its leaders care more about the fact that guns kill more children than anything else yearly than they do about drag queens, gay rights and a woman’s right to end a pregnancy. Trump may be a decent business man by some peoples standards, but our country is 34 trillion dollars worth of debt, 4 years of Trump isn’t going to fix that, but Kamala being there could save children’s lives, could save the lives of queer and trans people and could be historical for so many reasons. Straight white men have been running our country since it began, it’s time for a change. Because she’s a woman, because she’s a poc, because she is well spoken, because she’s qualified and because she’s the best person running for the job. ps. Todrick Hall Instagram - How many Beyonce songs do you count? I was inspired by a video I saw on youtube by “paint” to create a Beyonce medley mash up. I wanted to challenge myself to sing every song that had be released at that time in just 4 minutes, which is mine and Beyonce’s favorite number…I mean she did get married on my b’day 4/4. THEN, I decided to challenge myself to do complex choreo and try to film them all in one take, which is SO much more difficult than it looks when you watch these. Anyway, I recorded the songs and sent the mp3 to my best friend Sheena who was like “I dunno Todrick, it’s just too much…I can’t even tell what the songs are” We still laugh about that to this day…I legit almost didn’t put the video out because I thought the songs sounded to jumbled together, then I realized that Sheena was the same best friend who told me we didn’t have time to learn the McDonald’s drive through so I thought…maybe that’s the new testament. Todrick Hall Instagram - When I got eliminated from American, I was so heartbroken. I learned a very harsh reality about being in the entertainment industry even in 2010. Being black in Hollywood is hard. I wanted to be myself, but the producers kept saying I needed to “appeal to middle America” and I interpreteded that as “don’t get too comfortable or too gay on Fox babes.” I’d hear the other contestants be praised and rewarded for mediocrity, and I was criticized for my creativity. When Ryan Seacrest told me I was voted out, I just immediately thought of all the people I felt I had let down by not making it further on the show. But, in the car on the way back from Fox my mom was like, “Don’t you let these people see you holding your head down. Go congratulate them, you’re just getting started.” I used to HATE when they’d say “American Idol’s” Todrick Hall, as if I belonged to them. I used to be so upset, but then one day it clicked to me…Todrick, if you’re SO upset by it then do something so great that they don’t have to use that name anymore.  So I decided to start a youtube channel, my friends Kali and Sheena asked me to go watch the new “Sex and the City” movie and as I was driving to them in my silver Ford Focus I saw McDonalds and started immediately singing what my order would be, by the time I got to Sheena’s house, I had written this entire song. I begged them to learn it and sing it with me and they agreed. We filmed it and shockingly the employee got the order right, tbh she’s the true star of this video. I posted it and went to watch the movie, when I got out…I had 10,000 views. For the next few days, I lived on my laptop clicking refresh over and over again. Within a week the video had gotten 1 million views, and people started stopping me at Wal-Mart saying “Hey, aren’t you that….” I’d stop them and say “Yes, I was on American Idol!” They’d say “No, you’re the McDonalds guy!” Mission accomplished, and the rest is history!

Todrick Hall Instagram - Little Todrick, it’s older Todrick here with some important advice…You are special, you move different, you speak different, you think different because you are different and that’s ok, but it’s lonely. The world might not give you a road to walk down, so you might have to pave your own yellow brick road. The way you love and the way you feel isn’t wrong, no matter how much people try to convince you that it is. You are a dreamer, so chase every single dream you can dream, especially the wildest ones…you’ll fail sometimes (a lot) and people who have never had a dream worth chasing will judge you for how you failed at chasing yours…ignore them, keep going! If you fail, fail hard. If you love, love hard. Give every chance you get, you fight as hard as you can so that future you’s won’t have to fight quite as hard. Sometimes, the people who will hurt you the most will be the people who look and love like you, keep loving them anyway…they’re hurting and your light may intimidate them. Keep going and be so great that they can’t ignore it! Be gracious, be kind, be relentless and when you finally get to where you’re going…remember the people who stood beside you the whole entire way and bless them if you can. I’ve been blessed to be a replacement in 5 Broadway musicals and 1 west end show, but this is my first time originating a role and to make things even more special I am composing new music for the show! Todrick Hall Instagram - I have been obsessed with all things OZ since I was 6 or 7 hears old. So, when I started making whimsical pop remakes of my favorite stories “Oz” was an obvious first choice. Many of you may not know this but I grew up in Texas with Scott, Mitch and Kirstie who later became known as part of the acapella group “Pentatonix!” Kirstie and Scott were a part of the original productions of “Cinderella ROCK” (coming out soon) I reached out to Scott and Kirstie and told them the idea, and being the theatre obsessed kids they were they immediately were on board. We had to start at like 3 am getting into makeup in order to shoot all the locations, I was so sleep deprived and so worried about them that I forgot my Wizard costume which was gorgeous, so I ran to a thrift store in the high desert, found some Christmas ornaments and a hat and spray painted my costume together for the video. It ended up being one of my most memorable looks and a lot of my fans came to my concerts dressed up as this accidental DIY Wizard lol. I have made a ton of videos but this is one of my favorites of all time, I remember that all the Ptx members recorded their parts separately and I cried when I heard the final mix of the music. It’s so incredible what they can do with their voices and sometimes when I’m watching this I forget that there is no music. At over 44 Million views on youtube this video is one of my most iconic creations and something I’m still so very proud of 10 years later.
Todrick Hall Instagram - 12 years ago, my biggest dream in life was to be on Glee. Ryan Murphy, the show’s creator, had posted that they were accepting submissions on myspace, youtube and facebook and so I wanted to do a fullout video in true Todrick form. The video got about 5 Million Views, but did not get me an audition for the show…clearly he was looking for people playing guitars in t-shirts instead of full production auditions. But, life is not a movie and sometimes the things you want, you get in a different package. I went on to get to work with Amber Riley and Alex Newell on many of my own youtube projects, Chris Colfer became a HUGE supporter of mine and to this day he still buys tickets to my LA concerts, I got to work with Naya Rivera on Step Up Highwater, I was a judge/mentor on “The Greatest Dancer” and got to work with the kind human that is Matthew Morrison for months, I worked with Lea Michelle on several Broadway Cares projects to raise money for HIV Awareness, Heather Morris and I became TikTok friends and I spent an evening with Kevin McHale at Simon Cowell’s home as well as running to him at like three Beyonce concerts because he’s a gay with excellent taste in music obviously. The moral of the story is, be unapologetic about your dreams…they will come true, just maybe in a different way than you dreamed them!

When I did this audition I was IN LOVE with my first true love, Gareth (the same guy I wrote “Color” about). He wanted to go to the audition with me so badly, but I was terrified that if he went I’d be outted and it would ruin my chances at success. He gave me a white rosary that he wanted me to wear when I auditioned so his energy could be in the room with me. I then had my friend Julia be there with my mom, just so to hopefully deflect from the idea that I could possibly be gay. It’s just so weird to me now. I’m happy that I did Idol, and happy that it went the way that it did. When I got eliminated from that show, I was devastated…not because of the loss, but because I went out being someone I’m not. I vowed to myself in the car on the way home that I would never deny my true self an opportunity. I’d rather go down in flames as my real self, that go up in lights as someone I’m not.

As luck would have it, when I got the news I happened to be preparing to shoot a new season of “Rupaul’s Drag Race!” I asked the producers if they’d send me my costume, shoes and wig (which is unheard of on Broadway) so that I could shoot a lipsync to Billy Porter’s rendition of “Land of Lola!” The producers were naturally very reluctant as they couldn’t be there to supervise the filming and Drag Race was like…girl you get one shot, we have an Emmy Award winning show to film. But, luckily Ru was so kind and he, Michelle, Ross and Carson all came out to watch me. Now, I don’t consider myself a drag queen (even though Bob and Monet make fun of me constantly about my stance on this subject matter) so performing in Drag while Rupaul watched me was the scariest thing I think I’ve ever done in my entire life, but I did it! Rupaul was so sweet and even did a little plug to tell people to get their tickets. To put the icing and cherry on top of an already draggy cake Rupaul showed up to my opening night of “Kinky Boots” and took pictures with the entire cast and my mom! That is a night I will never forget, thank you to World of Wonder and the entire Drag Race family for allowing me to film this moment and using this iconic stage to promote the Broadway show AND to the producers of Kinky Boots for trusting me with the costume and wig. The video now has over 10 Million Views and helped to promote not just the Broadway show but my involvement with “Drag Race” as well! Now that’s marketing babes!

I’ve always been a Nicki fan and a Disney fan so I thought, why not combine those two worlds and do some rap covers with a little Disney twist. I used to have a homemade rinky dink green screen studio in the garage of my old house and during the time I made this video I was putting out five videos every week. That was A LOT to keep up with, so my quality was starting to suffer, but on this particular day I was like…you know what, I’m gonna take my time with this. Being black in Hollywood is hard. I wanted to be myself, but the producers kept saying I needed to “appeal to middle America” and I interpreteded that as “don’t get too comfortable or too gay on Fox babes.” I’d hear the other contestants be praised and rewarded for mediocrity, and I was criticized for my creativity. When Ryan Seacrest told me I was voted out, I just immediately thought of all the people I felt I had let down by not making it further on the show. But, in the car on the way back from Fox my mom was like, “Don’t you let these people see you holding your head down. Go congratulate them, you’re just getting started.” I used to HATE when they’d say “American Idol’s” Todrick Hall, as if I belonged to them. I used to be so upset, but then one day it clicked to me…Todrick, if you’re SO upset by it then do something so great that they don’t have to use that name anymore.  So I decided to start a youtube channel, my friends Kali and Sheena asked me to go watch the new “Sex and the City” movie and as I was driving to them in my silver Ford Focus I saw McDonalds and started immediately singing what my order would be, by the time I got to Sheena’s house, I had written this entire song. I begged them to learn it and sing it with me and they agreed. We filmed it and shockingly the employee got the order right, tbh she’s the true star of this video. I posted it and went to watch the movie, when I got out…I had 10,000 views. For the next few days, I lived on my laptop clicking refresh over and over again. Within a week the video had gotten 1 million views, and people started stopping me at Wal-Mart saying “Hey, aren’t you that….” I’d stop them and say “Yes, I was on American Idol!” They’d say “No, you’re the McDonalds guy!” Mission accomplished, and the rest is history!

Many of you may not know this but I grew up in Texas with Scott, Mitch and Kirstie who later became known as part of the acapella group “Pentatonix!” Kirstie and Scott were a part of the original productions of “Cinderella ROCK” (coming out soon) I reached out to Scott and Kirstie and told them the idea, and being the theatre obsessed kids they were they immediately were on board. We had to start at like 3 am getting into makeup in order to shoot all the locations, I was so sleep deprived and so worried about them that I forgot my Wizard costume which was gorgeous, so I ran to a thrift store in the high desert, found some Christmas ornaments and a hat and spray painted my costume together for the video. It ended up being one of my most memorable looks and a lot of my fans came to my concerts dressed up as this accidental DIY Wizard lol. I have made a ton of videos but this is one of my favorites of all time, I remember that all the Ptx members recorded their parts separately and I cried when I heard the final mix of the music. It’s so incredible what they can do with their voices and sometimes when I’m watching this I forget that there is no music. At over 44 Million views on youtube this video is one of my most iconic creations and something I’m still so very proud of 10 years later.

I went on to get to work with Amber Riley and Alex Newell on many of my own youtube projects, Chris Colfer became a HUGE supporter of mine and to this day he still buys tickets to my LA concerts, I got to work with Naya Rivera on Step Up Highwater, I was a judge/mentor on “The Greatest Dancer” and got to work with the kind human that is Matthew Morrison for months, I worked with Lea Michelle on several Broadway Cares projects to raise money for HIV Awareness, Heather Morris and I became TikTok friends and I spent an evening with Kevin McHale at Simon Cowell’s home as well as running to him at like three Beyonce concerts because he’s a gay with excellent taste in music obviously. The moral of the story is, be unapologetic about your dreams…they will come true, just maybe in a different way than you dreamed them!
