Happy birthday boo. 55 never looked better on anyone. Every day with you is an adventure. Thanks for showing me what end of a fork is best to eat with. #manifestingabundance @gavinkaysen
That’s me kissing my mother Caren Zimmern who was born Clara Betty Heyman in 1929 although her whole life she told everyone it was 1935. Look at how joyous she was in that picture. Why? Because by that time in her/my life she wasn’t worrying about me anymore. The first 40 years of my life she was pretty damn worried about me all the time! The first 14 years it was the natural worry of a mother, the next 14 years i worried a lot about her (she was very ill and remained so for the rest of her life) and then despite her wellness challenges and all that it brought her she had new worries for me as I was drinking and drugging my way through life. Until i became a parent myself 19 years ago i had no clue as to the burdensome depths of worry I was to her. Mothers even more so than fathers are hell bent on insuring their children make it out of the nest and fly on their own. It took me about 40 years to get it together. I owed her such a debt for all the lies, the stealing and worry, that I moved her from NYC to Minnesota in the later years of her life so that I could care for her a little bit more and so she could be closer to her grandson. Despite her fragility and other aging issues, I think those were some of her happiest years. I have regrets in life that nothing can erase. I’ve learned to manage them so they don’t overwhelm me but a big one revolves around the question of “what I could have done differently” for my mother. This picture reminds me of the simplest truth. I hadn’t bought her anything that day. I hadn’t done something specific to make her proud, there was nothing going on here except kissing her cheek visiting her home. But that’s all it took to make her so happy, because there was nothing for her to worry about. How we make people feel is the secret sauce of life. The tie that binds. My mother always loved me unconditionally despite all my shortcomings and I think about her all the time, especially on days like these. Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and for anyone who struggles with this day, I get it. Go do something for another human being, get out of your own head. That’s what I’m doing. It would have made my mom really happy.
Epic trio of @deadandcompany shows @spherevegas … this place and this s band has to be seen here to be believed… the greatest of great concert experiences… seeing music will never be the same again
My father took my mother to @trattoriasostanzafirenze in Florence Italy on their honeymoon. It was 1956. He went again several times in the early 60s and took me for the first time in 1968. I was 7. I went a few more times with him over the next decade and went with my friend Clark in the spring of 1977 after a ski trip and with my friend Toby before we went off to college a few years later. I made it back to Florence a few times over the 40 years, always ate at Sostanza. Crostini with chicken livers, pasta al Sugo, bistecca Fiorentina (pictured), wood roasted pigeon. The hits were endless. The room always prefect. I love this restaurant. Shot some TV there a while back and these pictures were taken last week by my friend Snuffy who needed a place to eat while traveling to Florence. He went twice. My relationship with this restaurant is 55 years old. And it brings me so much happiness. I can’t wait to get back there. Do you have a restaurant like this in your life? It’s a magical thing. Anyone else been to Sostanza in Florence? It’s a must

Who doesn’t love this! Watch all the way, lots of surprises
Who doesn’t love a fried chicken finger? What if you marinated it in Thai red curry paste and coconut milk, then fried it with chiles and shiso leaves to create a bountiful, flavorful mountain of fried chicken? To learn how, join me on Substack — where kitchen experiments yield delicious results.
I adore poached salmon. Light, seasonal, and perfect for Mother’s Day brunching, I like to drizzle mine with a homemade hollandaise. Watch me get started on the poaching liquid, or court bouillon, that will imbue the salmon with great flavor then click the link in my bio for the complete written recipe and more Mother’s Day recipe ideas!
Can you eat chicken that’s pink? 🐓🍗 In short, yes! High-quality chicken has a greater potential to appear pink, especially with really fresh chicken like the kind you would find at a farmers market. It’s more important to pay attention to the temperature rather than the color. Got a cooking question for me? Submit on Substack and I might answer it this week!
Happy birthday @gailsimmonseats … you’re the grooviest, coolest bestest buddy and the Zimmerns love you lots. Thanks for always supporting me, always answering the phone when I need to talk or vent or whatever. You’re the cat’s meow
Mangoes. 10 ways. The mango aguachile and the mango jam/foie with a mango bread ‘knot’ were my faves. Thank you @ritzcarltongrandcayman What’s your favorite way to eat mangoes?
Auflauf is one of my favorite Sunday brunch foods and it makes a perfect breakfast in bed for any and all moms this Mother’s Day! The German-style pancake grows up the sides of the pan and forms an amazing, thick, crêpe-y pancake just yearning to be filled with all of your favorite ingredients. I opted for a sweet version, with fresh berries and powdered sugar, but you can customize this one however you like. For the full recipe and more Mother’s Day inspiration, visit my website!

Thai red curry chicken, sandwiched between two crispy rice paper sheets with a nuoc cham dipping sauce? I’m in! I got creative on this one and experimented with textures, flavors, and influences — and I hope I can inspire you to do the same in your kitchen. The key to this barbecue chicken is to cook the chicken quarters over indirect heat with a lot of smoke, before finishing them over the coals until nice and crispy. Glaze the chicken right before you take if off the grill to avoid burning the sauce. The result is perfectly cooked, incredibly juicy dark meat that’ll be a hit at your next backyard barbecue. Check out my website for the full recipe – link in bio.

Watch out. The @timberwolves can beat any team in the @nba on the road. They just took out the Nuggets in game 1 of the west second round and @charleswbarkley called it before the tip. In MN we had the T-Wolves all the way. Which by the way is how the rest of this playoff run will go. #alltheway
“BREAKING: The NBA is set to announce that as punishment for the missed technical foul on Coach Malone, the heat pack thrown onto the floor by Murray AND the “money sign” by Murray, the Nuggets will be forced to play the Wolves on their homecourt twice in a row this weekend.” Source unknown but I love this
