The oppression of Christians in Gaza is not a recent development, but it has been exacerbated by Israel’s blockade, which has led to a decline in living conditions and access to essential services. This blockade, in effect for 17 years, has contributed to the erosion of the Christian community in Gaza through illness, isolation, and, tragically, death. On October 19th, Israel bombed the Church of Saint Porphyrius, Gaza’s oldest, killing at least 18 people. Despite the Israeli army’s statement that the church was not the target of the attack, Diana Tarazi, a 38-year-old Palestinian Christian, expressed disbelief, stating, “The missile fell directly on it. We cannot believe that the church was not their aim.” Pope Francis has repeatedly used the term “terrorism” to describe Israeli actions in Gaza, including the killing of unarmed civilians taking shelter in churches. In his Christmas Day appeal, the Pope called for “an end to the military operations with their appalling harvest of innocent civilian victims.” The persecution of Christians in Palestine is not a new phenomenon but has deep historical roots, dating back to the Nakba of 1948. Despite facing ongoing challenges, both Muslim and Christian Palestinians continue to demonstrate resilience and hope in the face of adversity, embodying the spirit of perseverance that has defined their struggle for generations.
