John Leguizamo Instagram – #Mifepristone is headed to #SCOTUS ~

Yesterday morning, the U.S. Supreme Court announced that they will hear a case challenging the FDA’s approval of mifepristone — also known as mife, one of two medications used in medication abortions. Federal courts in Texas ruled in favor of anti-abortion organizations suing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April. The Supreme Court then issued a stay in the case, protecting peoples’ access to mife as it worked its way through the courts. SCOTUS’ announcement today means that mifepristone remains available for now. However, the facts remain: access to mifepristone shouldn’t be at risk at all.

Mifepristone is safe, effective, and has been used by more than five million people in the United States for abortion and miscarriage care since the FDA approved it more than 20 years ago. This case is a calculated attack on abortion access. And the repercussions could go far beyond abortion care: it could upend the country’s drug approval process and put every approved medication in the political crosshairs.

We don’t know SCOTUS’ schedule yet, but we expect that arguments will take place in the spring with a decision likely in June. Right now, Planned Parenthood health centers across the country will continue to provide access to safe and effective medication abortion using mifepristone to patients that seek care in states where abortion is legal.
