A little piece of Japan in Cambridge. (Well, not so little…) Yesterday I had a reunion with my old and dear friend Kumiko. She and her family created the Japanese Sake brand “Dojima”, brewed on a gorgeous estate near Cambridge called Fordham Abbey. (The Dojima sake brand actually goes back 500 years in the Kansai ) Kumiko and her brother Tadakazu spent the whole day making Sake (the main process takes one month of the year), and yet Kumiko took the time to make “Gyoza” – we jokingly called it “Sunakku Kumiko”. A “Sunakku” from the English “Snack” is usually a tiny drinking place run by a “Mama-san” who is a middle-aged owner who has great hosting skills. People pop by for a drink and some simple snacks, and maybe sing a Karaoke song or two, but mostly they come to meet the Mama-san. Calling it “Sunakku Kumiko” was funny in a few ways – Kumiko would be the youngest “Mama-san” I have ever met, and the venue is far from tiny – it is an estate. LOL. I was also fortunate enough to have a few cups of their Sake – and I mean fortunate – it sells for £1000 a bottle. The sake itself is beyond words delicious – true to the sake’s history and the gorgeous environs it is brewed in. It was amazing to meet Tadakazu for the first time!
