Jon wrote: “When I created the Best Party, I made a point of bringing in as many generous, intelligent, and sincere people as I could identify. Most of these people had, like so many others of the same ilk, ended up following the route of passivity in politics. With the Best Party I wanted to address precisely these people and get them to join in.” In 2010, the Best Party captured 6 out of 15 seats in the City Council of Reykjavik, the largest city in Iceland and half it’s population, and Jon became Mayor, while promising he would not consider coalition partnerships with anyone who had not watched The Wire. Jon said: “Just because you’re funny doesn’t mean you can’t be serious.” In the four years of his term as Mayor, Jon led with distinction and surprised cynical critics. He introduced Betri (Better) Reykjavik, a direct democracy platform that empowered citizens to weigh in on direct proposals for municipal spending, and offered the platform to any other governments who wished to use it. Reykjavik stabilized, after a spate of one year mayors and political turmoil, and citizens could focus on rebuilding and trusting their government to be engaged and responsive. He spoke out about human rights and for dissidents around the world. He dressed in drag and led the city’s Pride parade. He dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi and received the Lennon Ono Grant For Peace Award in 2014. He inspired other comedians-turned-public servants, like Ukraine’s President Zelensky (after winning the Ukrainian Presidency, Zelensky’s chief of staff said, “We made history based on his example” about Jon). At the end of his first term, Jon and his party had approval ratings high enough to easily ensure reelection, had he wanted, but instead Jon left government, and turned to his creative pursuits. My friend Jon Gnarr @jongnarr is running to be President of Iceland. 🇮🇸 Jon is a good man. The world needs more good men and women in politics, who look past the nonsense and care little for accumulating power, and simply want to do good, better the lives of their citizens, and help those in need. Jon pledges to “stand for joy, work for joy, and offer joy and surprise with joy.” Beginning in 2008, Iceland experienced the largest relative systemic banking collapse anywhere in economic history, along with a dramatic crash of Iceland’s currency, and the loss of 90% of the national stock market’s value. The Icelandic people, like many others around the world, had been betrayed by their business and political leaders, who loaded up banks with debt and looted the economy while the people trusted them to minimize risk and protect the welfare of everyday citizens. Iceland faced a severe economic depression. Jon is a comedian by trade, who first founded the Best Party with other non-political friends in 2009. His platform included: “free towels in all swimming pools, a polar bear for the Reykjavik zoo, all kind of things for weaklings, Disneyland in the Vatnsmyri area, a ‘drug-free’ Althing (Parliament) by 2020, sustainable transparency…” (Post 1/3)

Jon wrote: “Leo Tolstoy once said, ‘Everyone wants to change the world, but no one wants to change himself.’ But I feel that I have changed myself. I’ve done my homework. And next I want to try – just try, mind you! – to change the world. In a positive way. This essentially means leading by example. The Best Party wants to be a good example. We strive for honesty. We are against violence. And where others see problems, we provide solutions. All this is extremely tiring, but it’s what we’ve tried to do.” Jon is not an economist. He is not a political science professor, or a general (Iceland has no standing army anyway). He is an artist, a writer, an actor, a musician, a creative, a thinker, a talented connector of humans and a leader who translates empathy into effective policy. He is an honest citizen and public servant, motivated by the love of his people and the world, who celebrates what makes Iceland special – resilience, uniqueness, creativity, and a can-do attitude, and tries to make government serve the best interests of its citizens, instead of having citizens serve the best interest of government leaders. Iceland’s citizens vote for their next President on June 1, 2024. Iceland is governed by a Prime Minister, and the President is a figurehead who represents the nation, and can veto parliamentary action. Jon has pledged to use his office, should he win it, to represent the best parts of Iceland to the world, and to use his powers to align the actions of Iceland’s government more closely with the will of the people. I hope all my friends in Iceland, and friends with friends in Iceland, will support Jon and fight for a better, cleaner, more transparent, and more humane government around the world. And if you believe you can help make the world a bit better, you should run where you are too! Government should be “of the people, by the people, for the people” everywhere. (Post 3/3) Good luck Iceland! Good luck @jongnarr ! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸🇮🇸
