Just a few hours ago, the unthinkable happened — the citizens of the State of Kansas, one of our reddest and most Republican states, voted in an overwhelming landslide by nearly 20 points to keep abortion legal and available to all women! Let this be the word and the warning that goes out to all who seek to take any rights away from women: YOU will not succeed, and you will be defeated in this fall’s election. Voters in Kansas came out in droves on Tuesday to tell the Supreme Court where they could go. Their message from Kansas and the challenge to the rest of us is clear: We have 3 months until Roevember to work as hard as we can to save our Democracy. We demand that Democrats running for office sign a pledge to make Roe v Wade the law of the land — and to eliminate the filibuster. All 147 Republicans in Congress who on Jan 6, 2021 voted against certifying the legal results of the 2020 election must go to wherever traitors go. Dear President Carter: I know you told me to call you Jimmy, but I couldn’t then. And I can’t now. In 2004, you invited me to sit next to you in the presidential box at the Democratic National Convention in Boston. It was truly one of the great honors of my life. It also did you no favors, and in that moment I wondered why would you want to suffer the attacks for placing beside you the person who just a year earlier was booed off the stage at the Oscars for dressing down the commander in chief as a war criminal on the fifth night of the Iraq War. But you didn’t care about the political reaction to you cozying up to me, the backlash you’d get from the 70% of the American public who supported the invasion of Iraq. You weren’t offended by me who had stood in front of a billion people stating that we were being lied into this war, that Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11, that we would find zero weapons of mass destruction, and that thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians were about to die. In fact, you agreed with me. I had a great conversation that night with you and Rosalynn. Your running commentary on the Democrats was priceless. Your sense of humor was making it all bearable for me. The news a couple weeks ago that you’ve decided to enter hospice — an “end of life” hospice as the news reports called it — was devastating. I broke down and cried. People will say that at 98 years old you’ve been blessed to live such a long life. And of course, that is true. But I’m not crying over you. I’m crying for us. We need 10,000 more of you, not one less as you leave us. Pundits will continue to “explain” and misunderstand your presidency. The Right despises you because you’re the Christian they fake-claim to be themselves. You’ve lived like a true Christian — humble, kind, forgiving, and always making sure your actions matched your words. So who am I to tell you to believe that better days are ahead? That we will own #Roevember? I don’t have a crystal ball… But I listen. I learn. I participate. I know who my fellow Americans are and I know the loudest and most hateful ones are not the majority. We are. I’m not a cynic. If I were, I couldn’t have written those last two sentences. All I ask is that you not give in to the cynicism. You have a right to be angry and to feel the utter despair over what has become of us. How often we’ve been let down — betrayed — especially by Democrats. How those with the big bucks control what seems like every friggin’ aspect of our lives. But they also know how we intend to one day rule over them and make them pay for their crimes against us and this planet because we intend to live and enjoy that pursuit of happiness we were promised. Last week Pope Francis visited Canada to apologize and seek forgiveness for the crimes committed by the Catholic Church against the indigenous peoples of Canada. He called that practice of Christianity “evil.” On the first day of his visit, I received an email from one of Canada’s most well known and beloved Native Canadians, the folksinger Buffy Sainte Marie. In her message, she explained why an apology isn’t enough. My friends, Roevember is coming! There is a colossal uprising underway right now and it doesn’t involve an armed mob storming the Capitol, or a mass shooting at a July 4th parade, or guys I went to high school with trying to kidnap the governor of Michigan. Rather, it looks like this: Kansas. Last Tuesday, when nearly two-thirds of that state voted to keep abortion legal, the turnout was so huge it nearly doubled the number of voters who participated in the last off-year primary election in 2018 — and nearly TRIPLED the turnout from 2014. In the six weeks between the Supreme Court overturning Roe v Wade in June and the Kansas election on August 2nd, new voter registration in Kansas skyrocketed. And here’s the number that most media seems afraid to report: 70% of those newly registered voters were women. And then there was this: Of those who showed up to vote in Kansas on Tuesday, a whopping 20% of them ONLY voted on the abortion proposal — and left the rest of the entire ballot BLANK! If the patriarchy of the Republican Party, along with their white Supremacist co-horts and Catholic Church funders, didn’t understand the raging fire they had ignited, well, they do now. I mean, how angry, how committed do you have to be to drive to the polls on a near 100-degree day, stand in line for an hour — and then just go in and mark a single “X” on the ballot?! Add to that the most-watched reality TV show of the summer, the mind-blowing January 6th Hearings, where middle America saw a president literally organizing a coup to overthrow their Democracy. And add to THAT, thanks to the Supreme Court (again), the NRA and one gun massacre after another, the American public was now no longer feeling safe sending their children to school, shopping while Black at a supermarket, or watching a parade. The people simply have had it — and Kansas became the first (but not the last) state where the citizens are now in full revolt. Roevember is coming.
