At least 4 people were killed on Thursday in the largest attack on Lviv’s civilian infrastructure since Russia invaded Ukraine last year, destroying entire floors of a residential building that was struck and leaving the streets below covered in rubble. Four were killed and nine others injured, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported Thursday, as emergency service workers searched in the debris for more people trapped. Ukraine’s air force reported it intercepted seven of the ten Kalibr cruise missiles that Russia fired from Black Sea toward the western Ukrainian region of Lviv and its namesake city around 1 a.m. (2200 GMT) Thursday. Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said around 60 apartments and 50 cars in the area of strike were damaged. In the early days of the war, Lviv served as a main transit point for millions of refugees from different parts of the country that crossed the border to Europe. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians from the east and south remained in the calmer and safer Lviv. Video by @mstyslav.chernov #ukraine #russia #invasion #war #news #documentary #video #lviv

The Ukrainian special forces operative makes his way through the narrow trench held one week ago by Russian military in the southern Zaporizhzhia region, stopping to shift the dry earth with his foot. “You can see all these flies here, and some fresh ground. Some Russian soldier already ‘rests’ in here,” says the man who goes by the nom de guerre Gostryi. The Ukrainians have attacked in several places in the Zaporizhzhia region, gaining some territorial gains along the southern front line. Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar characterised the battle as fierce. Russian forces are focusing their efforts to impede Ukraine’s progress by launching air strikes near the Zaporizhzhia regions of Novodanylivka, Orikhiv and Robotyne, as well as attacking 40 settlements with artillery, according to the latest report of General Staff of the Armed Forces. In the recently taken trench, the sound of incoming fire resounds above the soldiers’ heads. Plumes of dust and smoke rise up in the distance as the battle rages close by. Gostryi fires toward the Russian positions. “We have to poke them from time to time, to make them feel they’re not at home,” he says. Ukraine so far has focused the initial stages of its counteroffensive on several sectors of the frontline in the Zaporizhzhia region and the adjacent part of the Donetsk region. So far they have made only incremental gains around Orikhiv and some other sections, but if they pierce the Russian defences they could forge south to the ports of Mariupol and Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov and cut the Russian land bridge to Moscow-occupied Crimea, slicing the Russian forces in two. While Ukrainian forces have made some gains, each position taken needs to be held amidst ongoing heavy fighting. Progress forward is slow as they probe for weaknesses on the heavily fortified Russian line. Ukrainian officials on Saturday morning reported more civilian casualties from Russian shelling in the country’s east and south. The attacks came as a visit by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez began in Kyiv in a show of continuing support from the European Union for Ukraine. In the southern Kherson region, artillery fire by Russian forces destroyed two houses. Two children and one woman were taken to hospital to be treated for shell-shock. Saturday’s attack came after five people including a child were wounded on Friday and overnight in the Kherson region in the south, according to Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin. He said Russian forces launched 82 artillery, drone, mortar shell and rocket attacks on the province, which is cut in two by a stretch of the 1,500-kilometer (930 mile) front line and still reeling from flooding unleashed by the collapse earlier this month of a major Dnipro river dam. Since last November when Russian forces retook the city of Kherson, Russian forces have continued daily attacks on the province.
