70 years ago today Roger Bannister ran the first sub 4 minute mile, at the Iffley Road track in oxford (where I did athletics as a student), a feat previously thought humanly impossible. Interestingly, in a world where all our sportwear is now made of plastic, Roger ran that day in cotton vest and shorts, and was wearing leather running shoes. He ran late in the afternoon having already done a shift at a nearby hospital where he was a doctor, he ran in 25mph winds and the pouring rain, on a cinder track, fuelled only by a bowl porridge. To many it is the greatest sporting feat of all time. Happy Roger Bannister day.
