Theaster Gates Instagram – The black monks @blackmonkschicago have been an important part of my creative life for almost 20 years. Every iteration of spontaneous brotherhood through sound has given me joy and unlocked necessary emotional and spiritual fissures. Recently @yaws_world and @mrmichaeldraytonsr joined me in Japan and for 5 days, they gave the most beautiful energy and helped to transform the museum space into a space for contemplation, comedy, and joy. Thank you, Yaw for being my brother and the greatest vocalist I’ve known. Thank you for sharing your talents with us all. And thank you, Michael, for being my big brother, early teacher, amazing musician, leader and rare weird soul! Many thanks to everyone who has shared a mixer board in the name of the black monks.
