Some of the worst crimes in history were committed in the name of fictional stories that people believed. Very few wars are about objective material things: it’s when people can’t agree on the story that conflict arises. How can we create good common stories that benefit people and prevent bad stories that cause huge misery? First, we need to understand that humans like us created the stories – so we can also change them. Our relationship with reality: it’s complicated. Outside the common imagination of human beings, there are no gods in the universe, no nations, no money, no human rights, no laws, and no justice. It’s our shared belief in these myths that cements our social order and enables large-scale human cooperation. #sapiens #imagination #cooperation #reality #myths #quote
2023 has been a very exciting year. That’s a big problem. The word “exciting” is the most misunderstood word in today’s English. When you meet someone new, it is common to say “I am so excited to meet you”. When you visit a new place, you say “I am excited to be here”. When you want to praise an idea you say “what an exciting idea”. Apparently, people think “excited” means happy, and excitement is always good for us. But excitement can sometimes be the opposite of happiness. Negative emotions like outrage and fear greatly excite people. When the body senses danger, the nerves flash emergency messages, the neurons fire rapidly, and the whole body is excited. In 2023 the entire world has been far too excited. Nowhere is the epidemic of excitement more evident than in politics. The world is flooded with exciting politicians who create exciting news. We desperately need more boring politicians. To flourish, humans certainly need to be excited sometimes – about people, places, and ideas – but we also need to wind down. Next time you meet someone, try saying “I am relaxed to meet you”. I hope 2024 will be a relaxing year.
When I say that Bitcoin is a currency of distrust, I’m just repeating what Bitcoin fans themselves say. There may be good reasons not to trust the banks and governments that create dollars, yens, and other currencies – but that doesn’t change the fact that the preference for Bitcoin is based on distrust of human institutions. Why is this an alarming development? Because the whole purpose of money is to create trust between strangers. Financial devices like currencies, bonds and shares – 90% of which are just data in computers – build trust between millions of strangers, who can then pool their knowledge and resources together, and cooperate. Humans control the world because we learned to do this. If we now lose trust in human institutions, this will limit the amount of money and handicap economic activity and cooperation. I hope that humanity finds a way to build trustworthy human institutions, instead of adopting technologies of distrust. #bitcoin #trust #distrust #crypto #currency #humanity #institutions #money #finance
Mass identities are based on fictional stories, not on scientific facts. Nowadays, much of the division of humans into massive groups still depends on religious myths. So in the 21st century religions don’t bring rain, they don’t cure illnesses, they don’t build bombs – but they do get to determine who are ‘us’ and who are ‘them’, who should we cure and who should we bomb. Most religions have a lot in common, but they are too often weaponized to generate division and conflict. #quote #humanity #identity #tribalism #cooperation #quotes #coexistence #bridgingdivides #religion

Human power comes from our intelligence and ability to tell stories and cooperate. But are these truly our best qualities? For all our power, we are still on the verge of destroying ourselves and our ecosystem. Our deepest insights come from compassion and introspection. Our best qualities are non-verbal. A well-told scientific story can have a deep and lasting impact on humanity. But how can we combine great storytelling with scientific rigor? Good stories can drastically change the public’s view of something. Similarly, science has the power to influence society and politics – but it should be committed to truth. Combining these qualities is crucial. For science to have a deeper impact, we need to have scientific storytellers. What defines our identity? The people we fight most often are our own family members. The disagreements that defined our ancestors are different from those of twenty-first-century humans. People in 1618 or 1940 Europe would be more likely to clash over things like race or religion. Today, they clash over dilemmas like an aging population, capitalism, and global warming. It’s the things we fight over that make us who we are. Identity is defined by conflicts and dilemmas more than by agreements. #quote #21lessons #identity #21lessonsforthe21stcentury #quotes
Institutions are the bedrock of society. They might not be trendy or stylish– and public trust in them has collapsed. But we need to invest in rebuilding that trust. – because institutions are an essential part of a functioning large-scale society. The most important thing for any institution is to be able to admit and correct its mistakes. This instantly makes it feel more trustworthy. Some people perceive history as a struggle of power and force, and believe that peace is an unrealistic prospect. But if you take a long-term view of history, it’s clear that violence is not a constant: more peaceful periods and more violent periods follow each other. “The international order has two main goals: The primary goal is to prevent wars from happening. The secondary goal is to mitigate wars, if they happen, by providing humanitarian aid and punishing crimes. But if the international order is not able to achieve the primary goal of preventing war, then the secondary goal is ultimately hopeless. If more and more wars erupt, then just trying to punish crimes and provide humanitarian assistance won’t work.” Watch the full @CNN interview of @camanpour with Yuval Noah Harari about the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the link in the bio. #wars #internationalorder #accountability
It’s not easy being human. Our ‘experiencing self’ is often strong enough to sabotage the best-laid plans of our ‘narrating self’. For example, I can make a New Year’s resolution to start a diet and go to the gym every day. Such grand decisions are the monopoly of the narrating self. But the following week when it’s gym time, the experiencing self takes over. I don’t feel like going to the gym, and instead I order pizza, sit on the sofa and turn on the TV… Nevertheless, most people identify with their narrating self – giving rise to the questionable liberal belief that I am an individual, and that I possess a consistent and clear inner voice, which provides meaning for the entire universe. #quote #homodeus #newyearsresolutions #newyear #humans #quotes
The danger of artificial intelligence stems from its capabilities, not our intentions. As we outsource more and more decisions to AI, we must ensure that such practices are supervised by institutions, and that non-human decisions are transparently presented as the products of AI.
