Before the opening of our current pop-up in Los Angeles, we curated a performative installation featuring our friend and muse Kiko Mizuhara. Inspired by the vibrant culture of celebrity that defines the city, we aimed to explore the inner world of pop icons, delving into their experiences of hypervigilance and the pervasive nature of idealization.
The setting of this installation captures the allure and complexity of celebrity culture. Amidst the space, a woman sleeps, her presence contrasting with the city’s pulse. Yet, even in her repose, she becomes a focal point, an object of fascination for those who pass by.
Conceptualized and documented by Carlota Guerrero, the piece is part of her extensive repertoire and exploration of the female gaze. Through her work, she delves into the complexities of how women perceive themselves and are perceived by others, encouraging reflection on the vulnerability and constant exposure inherent in the female experience.

ENG: “Photographer Carlota Guerrero and curator Mariona Valdés join forces in the launch of a project that seeks to ‘reclaim the patriarchal gaze and bring art closer to people.’”
“Taking inspiration from Margaret Atwood’s ‘The Penelopiad’, rather than traditional interpretations of the titular figure, the project is grounded in compelling speculation: how would Penelope herself narrate her own story, had she been granted a voice of her own?”
“Historically, labeling art as ‘feminist’ or tagging it as ‘female artwork’ has resulted in the systemic undervaluing of the diverse and complex artistry of those who identify as women. These labels carry the risk of relegating an artist’s work to the narrow confines of gender stereotypes, reducing its unique and substantial artistic value.”
“Penélope Archive aims to redefine artistic narratives that have been traditionally shaped by patriarchal perspectives. They aspire to reclaim, produce, and preserve what they deem significant, embarking on an act of symbolic restoration.”

“When I bring women together in one place and photograph them, I am creating new organisms, a surreal projection of my mind, an invented, new animal composed of bodies which feed back into themselves, as if each woman were an organ or a cell that, by joining the others, makes up a whole being. (…) My body is the body of a woman, and, in the bodies of of other women, I find a union, a fractal, an organised composition of similarities that make me feel I am where I need to be, as if, within the chaos, we were creating a small order…”
