My mother called me early in the morning. She said the people at the RC told her she could meet Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong personally at the AMK hub at 11 o’clock this morning, and that she could have a conversation with him. I approached the person there, and that was when I found out that they had wanted my mother to give an interview about her feelings about the Prime Minister leaving office. Sigh, Mummy is getting on in years and might have misunderstood what the RC people had said. It turned out that the PM would not be there and my mother would not be able to meet the PM face to face. Understandably she was a little disappointed. She told the person in charge that she had expected to see Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong himself and that she wanted to thank him and present him with the pumpkin 🎃 cake she made the night before. I had a pleasant surprise when a card, personally written by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, arrived last night. After all, it is his last day as Prime Minister of Singapore today and he must have been busy with the proceedings. Yet he took the time to write the card. I felt moved. It was only on Monday that I received a text message from the PM’s press secretary. She told me PM Lee read media reports about how my mother missed meeting and passing her pumpkin cake to him. She said he had wanted to write a card to thank my mother and she asked for Mummy’s full name. Today, I went over to Mum’s to show and pass her the card from PM Lee. I even read what he wrote to her. Mom was so happy that she was beaming. It made her look cute. She even wondered how the PM could have taken the time to write to her – an ordinary Singaporean. She still couldn’t believe it, pinching herself to make sure it was not just a dream. Prime Minister Lee, thank you for taking the time out from your busy schedule to write this card to my mother. Thank you for your leadership and contribution to Singapore and your diligence and love for the people.
