Karina, I am so glad to have you in my life. My love and respect for you will never vanish. May all you wishes come true, darling! Happy Birthday.
Meet Tajianna! She is our Executive Assistant/Manager. She loves 13TH by Ava DuVernay and Lovecraft Country created by Misha Green. “When I first saw this documentary film, it was a catalyst of inspiration for me to tell stories that shed light on the disparities of Black people’s journey through this world. The way the subject of mass incarceration was approached in this project was wonderfully done. Beautifully shot interviews! Lovecraft Country is so revolutionary to me. I was so engrossed in the pilot episode because of the strong characters and dynamic storytelling. Fusing together social issues with the sci-fi genre in storytelling is my favorite thing. I desire to make a project as impactful within the genre. Compelling performance. Strong story elements. A great ride!”
I always loved and was inspired by her work. This is one of my favorites. Lourdes Portillo, Presente!

Happy Birthday, Audre Lorde. You are my deepest inspiration. You empowered me to do “my work”— the deep hard work of standing up for my power as a black lesbian film director working in a world where I don’t exist. Grateful for the stories and roadmaps you left for us. — Excerpt from “A New Spelling of My Name”
Director Cheryl Dunye sat down with Black Girl Nerds to discuss her creative journey – from her debut film The Watermelon Woman, the first film from a Black lesbian, to the development of her company Jingletown Films. Cheryl speaks on the importance of thinking out-of-the-box, playing with form and using all of your identity in your work, especially for queer people of color filmmakers. She also notes the significance of nourishing other modalities outside of cinema to become a better storyteller by tapping into all the aspects of who you are or could be. . . . #Director #WomenInFilm #WomenInMedia #WomenInEntertainment #QueerFilmmakers
Next up is Mecca! She is our Graphic/Brand Designer. Mecca enjoys INSECURE by Issa Rae & PORTRAIT OF A LADY ON FIRE by Céline Sciamma. “I first fell in love with Rae’s work when she produced Awkward Black Girl, it was the first time I felt seen. Isa Rae’s INSECURE was a very pivotal and impactful project that I got to watch while growing up through high school and college. She was one of the first examples for me that Black Women can have successful creative careers. Portrait of a lady on fire is a beautiful depiction of romantic love between women from the female gaze.”

Today we give flowers to Karina, our CFO! She has an appreciation for The Matrix by Wachowski sisters & Yo, la Peor de todas/I the Worst of All by Maria Luisa Bemberg. “I’m obsessed with nun life and it satisfies my nerd sensibilities around Mexican literature and cultural theory, as well as my love of historical dramas based on kick-ass brilliant women. Sor Juana was a 17th century writer, poet, and philosopher who’s wrote about women’s right to an education and love poems to vicereines, amongst many other things. Bemberg plays with religious conventions to create a pathbreaking story and sexy film. Also, I just simply love The Matrix by the Wachowski sisters.”
Congrats to EEAAO for the Oscar sweep! In honor of Women’s History Month, we wanted to highlight our team at JingleTown Films and their favorite women filmmakers. First up, is Danielle. She is our Director’s Assistant. Her favorite is “BORN” by Kim Ji- Young. “Kim Do-young directs some utterly heart-wrenching performances that at the very least will have you wanting to call your mom to tell her you love her. I’m a big fan of slow-burn human portraits, and this one does a beautiful job of depicting how we all play a part in perpetuating sexism, whether consciously or not, in a very nuanced yet deeply emotive way. It’s the perfect film to celebrate Women’s History Month and a directorial debut to envy.”
Huge congratulations to our client, Cheryl Dunye, on earning a Black Reel Award nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for her work as Director on The Umbrella Academy! . . . #TheUmbrellaAcademy #BlackReelAwards #Director #Nominee
