What a week at the Milken Conference! I’m grateful to have met many exceptional people this week —and heard from many fascinating figures including Elon Musk, Bill Clinton, and lesser known but equally fascinating names. This man maybe impacted me most. Let me explain why: I’ve found during my pregnancy and new mom journey that while some countries revere the new mom, the United States largely ignores her. We are the only developed nation that offers no paid leave for parents (thankfully California offers some support, but many states don’t). Yet in dozens of states, it’s illegal to separate a dog from her newborn pups before 8 weeks. Some might say our actions indicate we value dogs more than human moms/babies in America. That’s why I was so grateful for Nick’s kindness. I’m nursing currently and had to come out of the conference to pump in the car every two hours, and as head of parking, he made sure I could have access to my car to do so. It was a simple gesture but one he didn’t have to do. It made me feel so supported 😭 Thank you, Nick! Thank you to all the Nicks out there. I really feel like raising children is a team sport. Our children are our future and how we treat them at the beginning of their life will in part determine who we as a society come to be.
My latest trip to San Francisco was a mix of emotions. I learned about how 70% of the drug and fentanyl overdoses are happening IN fixed housing. Harm reduction policies that allow drug use in shelters are in fact, harming. But, I left hopeful. I met with students at SFSU, bright and full of promise, who understand we need a new generation of leadership. I met with changemakers who care deeply about their city, and are taking steps to bring it back to what it can be. As one example, the Salvation Army’s Way Out program is a new recovery-focused program that’s spearheading positive change. People are waking up. We can’t solve these problems with the same thinking/leaders that created them. ChristinaforCalifornia.com

Two frontrunners in this race are playing political games with our future. When will we say enough is enough? On CNN yesterday, I was asked about California’s jungle primary system. This means that on the March 5th primary, the top two vote getters move onto November, regardless of party, instead of there being separate primaries for each party. Because two Democrats could potentially advance to November, the Democratic frontrunners are playing a lot of games to manipulate voters and the outcome of this race. Schiff is elevating Garvey in his ads because he wants Garvey to be top 2 with him, because Schiff knows he will beat a Republican in a statewide race come November (this is why a vote for Garvey now in the primary is ultimately a vote for Schiff). Porter, after calling out Schiff for his behavior, is now doing the same thing. She is elevating another Republican in her ads, in hopes he will take away votes from Garvey and therefore help Porter secure the #2 spot. We need leaders who invest this level of energy in serving the people, not playing political games.
I felt frozen in time staring into the eye of this majestic curious humpback whale as it approached us 🐋#WorldWhaleDay was created to bring awareness to the plight of humpbacks. Through the work of conservationists and lawmakers, their numbers have made a come back. By banning commercial whaling, protecting breeding grounds, implementing bipartisan legislation like the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and fostering international collaboration, we can, and we have, made a difference! While we have a ways to go when it comes to protecting the natural world, we have proven what we’re capable of when we show reverence and care for mother Earth. Such a special day with these mothers who have overcome a lot and are fighting hard to break the cycle for their children. I believe one way to do that is through early literacy. That’s why at my baby shower a couple of weeks ago, after each guest brought their favorite book, I partnered with @gordonphilanthropies, who generously donated 2,000 copies of those books to @shieldsforfamilies.
