On this day in 1970. A tragedy that shocked the country. Four students at Kent State University were killed by the Ohio National Guard during a protest against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia during the Vietnam War.⁣

John Paul Filo, 21, a student at Kent State, made this photograph of 14-year-old Mary Anne Vecchio screaming over the body of student Jeffrey Miller.⁣

Afraid that his film might be confiscated, Filo hid it in one of the hubcaps on his car and drove to a small newspaper in Pennsylvania where he had interned. After processing the film, the photograph was sent on the wire to the Associated Press. It appeared on the front page of most U.S. newspapers the next day. (I was 15 at the time, and vividly remember seeing the photograph the next day in the New Bedford Standard Times.) Filo won the Pulitzer Prize for his photograph.⁣

A personal P.S.: As fate would have it, seven years later I started graduate school at Kansas State University, and began freelancing for the Associated Press (mostly covering sports and news on campus). My supervisor was John Filo, who had become the AP staff photographer in Kansas City. John became a mentor and friend, and profoundly impacted who I became as a photographer.⁣
