We took a quick family trip, and my husband thought it would be fun (and somewhat romantic…) to visit the #everglades. It WAS fun! I loved it! However, as I got settled in, and started our trip into the marsh, our guide’s first words were…
‘Now, if a snake falls into this boat, don’t jump out! Throw it out. Take a selfie with it. Hand it to me. Do whatever. But DON’T. JUMP. OUT!!!’
😳!
I looked at him and thought,
You must be crazy (as his shirt may suggest…),
If a snake falls in this boat, let’s see how fast I jump right out and walk on this water to get out of here…
Until…
…
I saw what else was in the water with us!

I guess…my choice would be the selfie. #saycheese #alligator vs #snake

Some days you go to that heavenly-warehouse-on-earth, @costco to get one thing (and ultimately catch the #Costco curse and buy 20, but I digress…) and you see your face all over the book section. We’re celebrating our extended family’s #christmas today because it had to be cancelled during Christmas due to you-know-what (I can’t say that word c-word anymore…). Anyhow, my mother-in-love slipped this goody into my stocking, and it may be the definition of my life 😏!

This may be one of my favorite pictures. I always would watch this picture and think my mother was SOOOO old in it, and as I do the math, she was still in her late 20s. Beautiful. Trinidadian. And proud of me for knowing the answer to ‘how old are you!’ She’s been proud of us all my life. Protecting us. Fighting for us. Supporting us. And praying for us. She’s a good mommy…and I’m grateful!

I love my early morning walks. New day. Clean air. Neighbors, with coffee in hand, saying #goodmorning. The early morning runners and walkers waving hello. The birds and the squirrels making the rounds. Me. My thoughts. The music of the waking world around me.
And All before it hits 100 degrees today 🥵! It may not be as poetic then…😃!

My husband and his brother are watching the game (#RollTide 😉). The kids are occupied. Giving me a moment to write my #journal before the end of the evening.
Like many of you, this day makes me reflect.
Look in the rear view mirror.
Rewind the film.
Turn my head and look back.
And as much as I’d like to sit here and write ‘but this wasn’t right…’ and ‘remember what s/he said or did to hurt you or anger you,’ or ‘this made you cry…that made you hurt…,’ I think this journal will end with #thanksgiving. #awe. Tears of #gratefulness.
I read my entry January 1st, and everything I asked for, wanted, needed to accomplish…was!
We’re healthy. We’re alive. We’re together. We’re in love. We’re loved. We’ve grown. We’ve learned. We’ve experienced blessings beyond compare.
We’ve been kept…and kept so well by a loving and gracious Father.
He’s kept His promises to us.
And I’m grateful.
Yep.

We all made it through a year that we were told was going to be tough. And even though, at times it was…here we are!!
And I’m so happy for these people i call my family…and for each one of you reading this.
Because if you ARE reading this…

Oh my heart…
My mother had a crush on Sidney Poitier! A formidable one that my father knew he had to accept and allow. Mr. Poitier was Caribbean. Talented. Successful. Kingly. And gorgeous. So, like any good mother, she planted her crush in me and watered it by making me watch ‘A Patch Of Blue,’ ‘To Sir, With Love,’ and ‘Lilies of the Field’ over and over again. By the time I met Mr. Poitier, I had watched all of his movies, studied his history, known about the strength he possessed to break through long-standing walls, forge through unchartered waters, and carry so many, myself included, while doing it all.
He came to see us in #Aida, and without being told he was present in the audience, I recognized his statuesque regality from the stage. I almost choked on my notes. I remember running backstage and telling them I didn’t think I could go on and perform with him in the house. I’m not normally star struck. But for him. I was. Still….
I’m grateful for the years he was granted on this earth. ‘So happy God gave him so many. But so sad that they had to end. I’m grateful for the lessons he taught all of us on and off the screen. He was the ultimate actor. And a gentleman. A gentle. Man.
Before Washington, and Freeman, and Whitaker, and Elba were.
Poitier is!!
And we will always call him…
Mr. Poitier!
(P.S. I still have that #crush…it came with me into my marriage, and my husband understands that he has to accept and allow it…🤷🏽♀️)!

It’s always a good day with @norbuck!
This is Norman Buckley, our resident #director for @sweetmagnoliasnetflix and one of our producers. With every season that passes, I find myself adoring him more…his mischievous spirit, his sense of humor, are only eclipsed by his love for us, his support, encouraging words, and his amazing talent in bringing out the best in each of us, making our show the best it can be.
And even though he jokingly threatens to keep me after hours for artistic detention (so to speak…), I’d do the time because I know he’d join me and misbehave with me in detention 😉!
A few more days of filming…and after almost four months away, I’m ready to be with my family and in our #home…but I’ll miss this Sweet Serenity family as well.
